p.1 #1 · Pixel Kings, Sony Alphas

Last night my HVL-5600AM played up, but recoverable due to having a couple of minutes to get the backup flash. It was off camera, firing fine at 1/16. Not frequent burst, single shutter, but reasonably frequent. It didn't feel hot or anything, and the other one set up identically was fine so I don't think I induced the issue myself. Anyway, it froze up, switched to TTL (useless) and wouldn't change, nor turn off. I had to remove the batteries to turn it off! Even then, it was still frozen, wouldn't change any setting... I haven't looked at it since, but safe to say it cannot be trusted anymore.

So I only use these ones in manual mode. I wonder if I could use something like a 5400HS in the same fashion w/o issue? Just in manual mode. They seem much cheaper. I don't like to 'cheap out' on things, so to speak, when I see the value in investing I do, but flashes seem very fickle with me at least. They seem to eat a hole!

I could get a couple of 5400HS's for less than £100. Does anyone know if these will work with Pixel Kings, in manual mode?

Many thanks

Yup they work for me. I'm dissapointed the 5400HS doesn't seem to have a detect flash and be a normal dumb slave mode.

So straight forward, no issues?

Yup no TTL, works to 1/160 if I remember.

That shouldn't be a trouble, as I'm usually a little lower or much lower than that... but... are you saying I definitely can't use it above 1/160th?
