p.1 #1 · Where to buy replacement side rubber piece for D700?

The side rubber piece (the one with the FX logo on it) is peeling slightly on my D700, and with all this talk of Nikon no longer selling the parts to consumers, I was wondering if there was any other place to buy this piece at a reasonable price. The only one I could find on eBay is $45, which seems pretty ridiculous for 1 little rubber piece.

Edit: it seems that this site still has the tape for the left side rubber piece for sale, though they no longer stock the left side rubber piece anymore. Would just buying the tape work?

try some "liquid nails" applied with a toothpick....the latex type.....not the solvent based stuff.

Take care with removing the old rubber, the FX-logo isn't on the rubber but on the camera.

We replace that piece a lot. In the good old days we just bought the rubber and tape from Nikon for $18. Since they stopped selling it we've tried just retaping (you can buy the double-sided tape in sheets and cut the piece out too, for when that vendor runs out of stock).

Unfortunately the rubber piece is kind of stretchy and it seems to keep peeling up once it's come up once. The best solution we've found is to retape it, but put a bead of of glue, like Gene mentioned, along the edges.

One rather simple stop-gap: the tape is heat sensitive. If you heat the adhesive and the rubber piece with a hair dryer it's adhesiveness will be restored to some degree and it may stick better. Not perfect, but sometimes better enough to last a few months.

The bottom line for us has been we can retape or glue it and get a few extra months, but eventually we have to replace the rubber.

If Nikon won't sell me the parts anymore, they won't be selling me my next camera.

I bought Nikon's extra two-year extended warranty for $150, and one of my D700s had been sent back more than five times for its grip rubber replacement for free.

Have you tried contacting Nikon? I got mine from Nikon Canada for $15. Unfortunately shipping was $15, but I got some other parts with it. FWIW the part did include the FX logo, although when I peeled off the old part the logo did separate and stay behind on the body momentarily.

Part numbers from Nikon Canada:

* D700 Hand Grip rubber 1F998-684 C$22.30
* D700 LHS rubber 1F998-741 C$15.53

Edit, I just re-read RCicala's post about Nikon US not selling it anymore. Maybe Nikon Canada can sell you one...

I hot glued mine back into position. It's not pretty, but it doesn't need to be.

When did you order yours from Nikon Canada? Supposedly the parts ban went into effect in July of this year. If you bought it recently, I'll certainly give Nikon Canada a call and see if they will ship to the US.

I ordered them June 27 this year and got them a couple of days later. So this would be before the ban.

I called Nikon USA today and was on hold for 30 minutes with no response. I also called the Nikon authorized repair center in NYC and they gave me a quote of around $25 to replace the left side rubber piece. I called a local camera shop, but, as expected, they told me that Nikon does not supply them with parts anymore.

So it seems that I'll have to make a drive up to NYC if I want to get this piece replaced.

I emailed Nikon Canada this morning explaining that I bought these parts from them before, and asking if the Nikon ban extended to Canada. I got this reply from the parts supervisor about an hour ago:

You can order parts from here if you have a Canadian address for us to send to.

Wow. So they'll still sell parts to us Canucks for the time being, and who knows how long that will last.

So. I'd be happy to order and send the part to you if you'd like, but keep in mind they charge $15 for shipping and there's the additional shipping for sending it to you from me. Not sure if it's worth your time and trouble when all is said and done, but feel free to ask here or PM me if you'd like. Good luck in any case...

I am trying to put one on my d300. is it easy to put it on or do i need to get it done? the ebay reseller states that i have to prepare the glue myself as the glue on the rubber grip may not be strong.

Have a look at this: http://tonycorrea.com/blog/2011/04/nikon-d700-rubber-grip-replacement/. It is for the D700 but I imagine there is a lot in common.

The replacement parts I ordered came with the glue already on, so it was easy. The hardest part was cleaning the glue residue from the old part after taking it off.
