p.1 #1 · D3s and 35mm 1.4G...horrible focusing problems!

I'm not sure where to post this, but I recently purchased a well-used D3s and slapped on my trusty Nikon 35mm 1.4G, which has always been spot-on with every other body I've used it on (D700 and D3). However with this recently acquired D3s, the AF is horrible. I just did some testing as I planning on using it for a Wedding on Monday, but the way it looks, being unreliable, it's not going to happen.

At the minimum focusing distance, it needs -20 adjustment (it's back focusing that bad), however, if a subject is a foot away, the back focusing isn't as severe, meaning I would have to change the AF adjustment to roughly -12 or so for the mid range. For subjects further than 10-15' the AF is back focusing by several feet and no AF adjustment can fix it, which I found out today while (fortunately just at a corn maze with my daughter and not during a paid shoot).

To my surprise, the other lenses I tested on it are spot-on with no adjustment needed (14-24mm and 70-200mm VRII).

I'm confused and have no idea what to do. The 35mm is absolutely spot-on, on my other D3 body that is my primary body (The D3s was intended to be its replacement and the D3 would be the backup).

I have no idea what to do at this point so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Can you reset the camera?

Or just use the 35 1.4 on your working D3 for this weekend.

David...I actually took the camera into a authorized Nikon repair center today and the tech was really helpful (although we didn't come up with a solution).

He also mentioned to reset the camera, which I'm going to do and if it doesn't work, then I'll end up sending it in to Nikon to get calibrated I suppose.

I'll definitely use the 35mm 1.4 on my working D3, just would've liked to be able to use it on both cameras of course.

I'm not sure anyone here can do anything for you. Best bet is just to send it in and let Nikon fix it.

For what it is worth, I have had a couple lenses do that exact same thing on my D300. However, they were both Sigma lenses (50 1.4 and 70-200). Both were sent in to be fixed, and it was a lens issue.

Not sure why it would work on one camera and not the other though.

wow, that is strange. FWIW, I don't believe that I'd send in the body when it works great with your other lenses. If they "fix" the d3s to work with the 35, what will happen to the AF on your other lenses afterward?

Dunno, it's a difficult problem to figure out, but I'd be inclined to have them look at the lens first.

Two other "good" lenses are not a lot for comparison. If the body is well used, who knows what condition the AF system may be in?

First off, thanks for everyone's input.

I'd say other lenses are great for comparison because it tells me the AF system isn't completely non-functional, for whatever reason it's just disagreeing with the 35mm, for whatever reason. I unfortunately have a wedding to shoot this upcoming Monday and can't have my camera AND lens away from me for several weeks, so once the wedding is over I'll have to send everything in and see what comes of it. Really frustrating.

Hi,

own the same combo (D3s and 35 1.4G), and had trouble focusing the 35 too, although not as serious.
In my case, it depended on a bent camera mount (my D3s had a rather bad fall, *with* the 35 mounted. Lens came out unscathed, but the body cracked, and, we discovered later, the body mount bent).
After changing the mount, things improved.
Beware though: the D3s too never failed the "2.8 zooms test". Unless you really have a serious problem, F2.8 is a generous aperture for current autofocus systems, which helps to hide small misalignments.

In any case, though... expecting the G trio to focus reliably is "unfair" and, in my experience, somewhat delusionary...
I never can & could reliably trust the "G trio" to nail the focus all the time. No one of my bodies offers results that rid me of that post-shot "Has it really got it?" anxiety: the 2 D700s I had were good, but not perfect. Same goes for the D3s (slightly better), and the D4 (even a tad better than the D3s). But focusing at 1.4 can (and will) often go *really* bad, on any of my bodies. Especially the 24, which is really difficult to tell from looking at the viewfinder whether it's correctly focused or not.
It is just that f1.4 is a really tough aperture for the AF system.

Good luck, and enjoy your D3s: it's an amazing camera, and a tough opponent for the D4!
