p.1 #1 · D600 focusing tips please

Hi everyone! I just got my D600 today. I have a photo shoot tomorrow night with a 1 year old that is up and running around already. Any tips on what I should set my focus to? I have done some shoots in the past with my D7000 and when kids get up and run or throw leaves up in the air the movement is all blurred. Any tips would be very helpful! Thanks!

Wellllll, def a fast shutter speed, 1/400+ if you want zero motion blur...personally i'd shoot af-c, 9 point dynamic, focus tracking w/ lock on set to off or short...and prob stay with the center point, and crop later for composition...

And fwiw, my d7000 tracks kids awesomely with an 85 1.8, and sprinting dogs as well as can be expected...shoot a lot, i dont think a D4 has a 100% keeper rate...it's all about settings and technique..

I use those settings for my 20mth old. The keeper rate is close to 100% on D4, when using d7k not so much.

What lens are you planning on using? This can make a huge difference as a fast lens will allow for a faster shutter or a f2.8 zoom will allow for better focus accuracy. Set tour fous to AF-C single or 9 point, use AF-On set to AF only for focus and shutter button for tripping the shutter. Ise your center cross point AF points.

Part of shooting kids is controlling the movement. Letting them run around with out rhime or reason is an appetite for disaster. Lucky for you a 1 year old is new to walking so there should be little running mostly holding on to things and falling down. It looks from your post that you will be shooting at night not a whole lot you can do if it is dark other team to crank the ISO to get a fast enough shutter speed 1/250 or faster for a slow moving toddler. You can also use a speed light to freeze the action. My recommendation to you sweing as you have been unsucessful in the past is to take control of the 1 year old and shoot when there is as little movement as possible.
