Hey gang. I thought I'd post this set in it's own thread which I normally don't do.
I just returned from another short but outstanding backpacking trip. This time I was with a few friends in the Yosemite Cathedral Range. Our route was mostly cross country and the views were amazing. We visited several lakes and camped at a couple of them. I took my 5N and a few CV lenses. These were some of my favorites from the trip. Flickr crispy fried a few, I may reprocess some.
yet another great set! great compositions and processing
I really envy you for that experience! kosmoskatten wrote:
Very inspiring, thanks for sharing.
Thanks guys, I appreciate the kind words. Mother Nature did all the hard work, I just showed up and recorded it.
These were all shot with the CV15 - except...
#3 = CV 40
#9 = CV 90
#10 = CV 90
Derek, a few of them were stitches with CV15 #4, 8, 13. I get mixed results trying to stitch, I know to avoid the wide angle lens for that because of distortion, but I'm lazy and do it anyway. I think my biggest stitched image from this trip was around 42 MP.
If anyone's interested, my narrative along with my hiking partners narrative is here. Also more photos on that link.
Yes, the CV 15 is pretty great on the 5N. I didn't find the color shift to be too strong in these that they needed corner fix.
After these last couple of outings I think I want to take a look at my lens (The 15) to see if it's critical sharpness looks about right to others who also use it. For some reason it seems a little soft to me at 100%. In some cases it could be my fault, as I was shooting hand-held around 1/30, other times I was stopped down to f11 so that's another factor. I know my lens has a couple shims in it (purchased it used) which makes me wonder if I'm either not hitting infinity, or possibly focusing past it.
Anyone have suggestions on the best process or steps to troubleshoot it?
Great work, Jacob. Very pleasing images. I think #1, #12 and 14 would be great to see time-lapse videos of.
I also liked the report in the thread that you linked to.
I'm not too familiar with America's geography so I actually kind of expected to see churches (being confused by the word 'range' though). It would be more clear if you include Yosemite in the title.
Thanks AhamB. I updated the title based on your suggestion.
@misternikko, Many Thanks! I hear what you're saying about the flow of the set. The images I posted are from a ~30 image set. I only included the photos of the ultralight shelters to show how we camp when we visit places like this.
still interested in hearing how I might assess / troubleshoot my CV 15. I can probably come up with some methodology but I don't want to overlook something (or reinvent the wheel). Is there any good way to positively confirm if that I'm *not* reaching infinity focus?
Jacob, not sure I can help you with a formal testing methodology, but if you have some full-size images, I can let you know whether they're comparable to what I'm seeing with my CV15+NEX-5N. I'm also planning to do some hikes this weekend, so if I get a chance, I'll try to take some infinity shots with the CV15.
Hey Al. Thanks for the offer. Probably what I'll do is shoot a more controlled scene and either post the crops, or send you some files (if you're up for that). I forgot you had the CV 15 also.
Edgars, Yes! Cuben Fiber they are. I probably slot into the ultralight definition most of the time, although my pack weight for this trip was 25 lbs (plus 2 lbs of camera gear, so roughly 12 kilos total) which felt a bit heavy. Here's a shot of it...
What a pleasant surprise to meet you here ! I know ultralight is big in US and very slowly trickling down to UK. So much so that we now have our first commercially available under 0.5kg tent! I am planing to make some gear out of the cuben fiber myself one day! Interesting blog - I like that picture with you kids and their big rucksacks !
