Can anyone recommend a good camera strap? Should be getting a new 5d this week and I would like a good quality/comfortable strap. I would prefer one that does NOT attach by the tripod plate bolt.
Upstrap never slides off of your sholder and is long enough to wear as a neck or sling strap. The heavy duty model with the quick releases will make a pro dsrl and 300 f2.8 easy to carry all day.
Much more comfortable than hanging it off your neck.
(Oh. Read the rest of your post. I don't have a problem with this strap attaching to the tripod mount. A student of mine just lost her camera in a river using a conventional strap.)

My only issue with a tripod mount strap is when I have my camera mounted on a tripod sometimes I like to put the strap around my neck as an added measure of security.
i find the Luma Cinch the best of the shoulder loaded bunch (due to it cinch capability/feature) when used in conjunction with a Custom SLR C Loop on the base of my L plate. unscrew it in a few secs and its on a tripod or just free to use as needed. packs away nicely too.
i don't consider being strapped to my tripod as an extra measure of security. it adds to create another potential for failure and possible injury.

Honestly, that sounds like a good way to pull your tripod over...
Haha. Yes. I really meant to say in certain situations I'll put the strap around my neck when my camera is on a tripod. Like if I shooting a landscape on a bridge over water.

I'd prefer to clip the camera/tripod onto the bridge. Sort of like when you use protection for rock climbing. The goal is to prevent you from going down, not to enable it.
Well I ended up getting the Black Rapid Rs-7. I went into a local camera shop and they convinced me that they work pretty good. Did some walking around with it last night and it isn't too bad. Way better than the OEM strap. I got the extra bolt that allows me to keep my tripod quick release on all the time.
