I'm looking to update/upgrade my 1DsMark III, merely because "it's that time" and certainly not for lack of image quality. But I'm not quite sold on the 1Dx. I'm firmly entrenched in Canon because of lenses, but if Canon's response is in the $7K-9K range, it certainly would give me more pause for thought whether to jump ship to Nikon (D800e). The savings from the msrp difference would offset losses from selling/buying new nikkor lenses and related accessories.

2007 was a very different time in regard to FF sensors. Please have a look at the current competition in this market and what the D800 for example can do for less than $3K, prices have come down a lot in this segment. A comparison to MF is invalid, sorry - it is like comparing apples and oranges. If Canon really does this move with a $9K high MP FF camera, more consumers will switch to Nikon than they already do.

Yep, but then there is the D800 at 1/3 that price. Really depends on what the market Canon is going after. If they want to lure over the MF crowd, then they better deliver more than just pixels with the new sensor. If they want it more a general high resolution landscape, studio camera competing against the D800, then their price needs to come down big time.

Pentax 645D is 8.8K and while matching AF lenses are few and expensive (55/2.8 is 1.2K, 25/4 is 5K and the 90/2.8 is not yet available), old manual focus lenses are wildly available at significantly lower prices.

I did purchase a D800E in May and am very happy with it as an interium camera until canon releases the 46 MP replacement for the 1DSIII. I can't say I like Nikons ergonomics but the IQ will do for now. BTW I'm only bitching at the bitchers.
A canon 35 has a lot of ergonomic advantages over MF especialy for hikers that want to do landscapes. If I did studio photography I would have jumped to MF long ago. When I shot film I used a 2-1/4 X 2-1/4 Mamiya for hikes having to carry extra rolls of 220 film and change them in the field. What a PITA! I used a 4X5 Speedgraphics for non hikes.

Makes sense! BTW, what do you expect from a future 1Ds camera which the D800 doesn't already have (I am just curious)? Switching in your case to D800 makes sense to me. If there would be a way to use Canon EF lenses on the D800 (which is physically not possible) than even more people would get a D800 now (like myself I admit).
