p.1 #1 · PSD file with smart object issue

If I create a file using CS5 (win 7) with a vector/smart object and I try to open it on a different machine (Win XP machine or Vista) running CS2, I get an error saying, "Unknown Data has been encountered reading layer "(layer name)" and will be discarded. Continue?".

After I tell it to ignore or read composite data I can open it fine, but I can't batch process any images in that folder as that message will pop up every time. The only way I've found to get rid of it is to open each manually, edit something, and save it using CS2.

I have my version of CS5 set to maximize compatibility. Any image I create without and vector/smart objects opens just fine on the other two machine. Since I've got a couple hundred graphics I've created I'd really have to hate to open them all and fix them manually!

Two suggestions, neither of which I am guaranteeing for what you are trying to do:

1. Use the "Log Errors to File” option for your batch processing on the XP/CS2 side to see if that allows your batch to run without stopping at each error. See the middle of page 5 in this Adobd PDF:

http://www.jkost.com/pdf/photoshop/cs2/automation.pdf

2. Run a batch on the CS5 side (or perhaps using the Image Processor) to generated flattened TIFs or Jpegs and use those for your XP/CS2 machine. It sounds like your CS2 machine is relying on the compatibility layer of your existing files and that is essentially a flattened PSD.

Ok. I know options #1 doesn't work. I'm trying to convince my client that the end files they need (they're just getting printed on a magnet) they just need a jpg instead. They want PSDs to make small one time changes if they need to, which IMHO is one out of every 50 files or so.

Since they layer with the smart object seems to be the problem, I may just run a batch on my CS5 machine to rasterize that layer.

just run your batch in CS5 to avoid the error? Why are you smart objecting a vector?
its already vector (high quality)
