My experience with both lenses is that the Sig 50 (old) had a more 'painterly' draw, but sometimes inconsistent focus. The 50 1.8G is very reliable and sharp, yet rendering is simple and nothing to write home about. For general usage, I chose the 50 1.8G for its small size and consistent output.

AF reliability is impacted by strong focus shift (i.e. plane of best focus is at different distance if you stop down without moving focus ring or doing AF).

I shoot the 50 1.8g wide open on a D800 with excellent results. Can't beat it for the price either.
