The original 5D was a landmark camera and I loved mine (I've had three, still have one)
But the 5DII is simply a much better camera in every way, including image quality.
Don't forget it also costs $1000 more which can be used to equip oneself with a nice Zeiss 35mm lens for the 5dc.
As far as I age quality goes, that is debatable. The 5dc I owned produced simply amazing images in good light. Yes, the 5d2 has better high ISO images, but in good light, I would give the nod to the 5dc everyday.

I'm in the market for a 5D. I'm just not sure which way to go. If I don't shoot video and plan to use the camera for mostly street stuff with manual focus lens which camera makes the most sense, 5Dc or 5DII.
I was thinking very clean 5Dc for $500-$700 is a great buy.
Now I see 5DII new for $1800...just not sure the extra $1100 is money well spent. I'm merely an amateur and my 1Ds is getting a little heavy these days.
Is the MarkII really that much better than the original?
If you're a pro, without question. For an amateur, that's a judgment call. The resolution, superior screen, better noise, Live View, MFA, video, highlight tone priority, and sensor dust reduction would easily tip the balance for me.

Yes, but the OP is using the camera for street photography using manual focus lenses. That takes out the Live View and MFA and highlight tone priority. I still think for street manual focus photography, I would stick with the much cheaper 5dc and use the price difference to get a nice 35mm Zeiss. That package would deliver outstanding street shots.
Pro or not the 5D IMO is better IQ than the II but I like the higher ISO of the II at times and there are other features of the II I like better but if just IQ, I prefer the 5D. If you need a lot of cropping then you weren't framing right to begin with but if needed, then obviously the II will help.
I don't see any area the 5Dc has better image quality. I agree that an argument could be made for the 5Dc with street shooting as described, if that is the OP's sole pursuit.
Hey Folks!
I just revisited my post. Thanks for everyone's input. Not sure I made it clear but the majority of my shooting is in the street and most of my keepers were with the 5D and 100% manual focus lens. I've become pretty adept at either zone focus or focusing on the fly. In fact, I came from 35mm film so I'm actually comfortable in that environment.
No need for Liveview, very little landscape.
No need for cropping, so 12mp is plenty.
AF/ center point/ single point- more than enough--in fact don't need it
I came to the conclusion that the mere simplicity of the 5Dc, with its full-frame sensor was all I needed. When I had one before it just seemed like it didn't get in the way while I shot whereas my Leica keeper rate has been spotty at best..not sure why yet. It might have to do with my composition inside the viewfinder. I'm really hoping to utilize the 5Dc until I decide if a M9 will take care of all my street needs.
I keep working with the M8 in anticipation that the rangefinder will be the final solution to weight, utility, and rendering that I desire, but so far it hasn't come yet....Still hopeful!
Thanks again to everyone, camera will be here this week. Looking forward to using my humble Olympus OM 55mm f/1.2 and Nikkor 28mm f/2 Ai again.
