Actually theres one incredibly expensive way to have 85mm f1.2 on Nikon. Contax 85mm f1.2

And yea since this lens are not servicable, probably bit expensive. But then theres a lot of old expensive lens with zero service possible too.

Will do, however, they are exceedingly rare, and if and when they surface somewhere, they are priced around $500 if in a nice condition.

I could sell to you my ET-123B (for 500 f/4.5L) which I hacked to the 200mm FL.
A good thing about ET-123B is that the hood is of a smaller diameter than ET-123.
A bad thing is that it can not be reverse mounted on 200 f/1.8, because the tripod mount foot impedes it.

There are 5 for sale on ebay right now from $3400 to $6.5K. Since you can buy a new 200 F2.0 for about $6,000 I would say the low end is a nice price if they are a good seller. $6,500 is a joke.

That's what I have right now. Would like the reverse mount so it'd fit inside that small metal box.

It took me about 6 mos to find a used ET-123 on ebay, but I found one in good condition for about $200. There's an aftermarket one available for about $290 - maybe worth considering??

Shot my first kids soccer game with the 5D3 + 200F1.8 combo yesterday. The results reminded me of the Nikon D3/D700 and 200VR I used last year - both systems are great, so shoot what you got. Keeper rate with the 5D3 was lower, but it was my first outing with the 5D3 shooting action, and I'm just getting acquainted with the different AF options the 5D3 has to offer. These are cropped jpegs straight out of camera - I was happy with the results so I bother converting the RAW files. Game time was harsh noon sun, but took some sample shots and dialed back EC -1/3 to -2/3, until highlights stopped clipping. Daylight WB looked better than Auto WB with more consistent color - no surprise.

1. @F1.8 - just because I could:

Yes very rare. I managed to get one from KEH a couple of years ago, the nibs on mine were not holding the hood tightly. Even some of the nibs on the KEH one were not 100% but between the two I was able to take some from my original and some from the KEH and get one fully functional hood.

Very sweet, not so rare and better than the replacement 200L IS. And yes I have owned both.

These days I am strongly leaning toward an A99 and a 135 1.8. Either that of I will just buy the new Zeiss for Canon.

Oh and BTW the Canon 200L 1.8 is also head and shoulders above the Nikkor VR 200 2.0. And again yes I have used both.

I really wished Canon made a 200/1.8 with IS rather than a 200/2.0 with IS.

Some may argue that you don't need the f-number at that focal length but experience disagrees with this.

On the old photodo.com site, they had a scale from 1-5. The 200/1.8 got a 5.1, the highest score of any lens.

That reminds me of Bo Derek.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Giorgio, by "rare find" I meant one in (LN-) condition for $3,800.
Great looking fashion mag cover, and it is good to know that you also consider 200 f/1.8 to be ahead of 200 f/2 IS or VR.

Everything else being the same, does f/1.8 really matter that much more than f/2.0? Or is it something apart from the f-number that makes the older, non IS version seemingly better?

It is the special character of the way the lens renders the subject more than the 1/3 stop extra light or shallower DOF.

Yup, there is something different about that old lens.

Agreed, the 200L 1.8 is a magical optic.
I sorely wish I still had one!
