p.1 #1 · Firing my 50L from processionals and grand entrance

It missed the focus on too many of these lately. At first, when I was using it for a fairly well-list indoor ceremony as a last-minute substitute because I couldn't get to my 35/85 combo, it did great, lots of in-focus shots, tracked easily, and focuses much faster than the 85L anyway. However, after microadjustments on all of my cameras and tweaking so it gets still, nonmoving shots well, it just can't seem to handle moving subjects anymore...I wish I could remember what the MA settings were before, but somehow I doubt it would solve the problem.

Back to 24/35 + 85.

I had to send my 50L into Canon for similar reasons - now focuses like a champ and is my go to lens in all conditions.

sent my 50L in last year to Canon, came back great, back to giving me problems. Only Canon lens I've ever had some much difficulty with. Every other lens has been near perfect. I love it so much for portraits though, can't give her up.

Ouch. I'd probably sell it at that point. It wasn't cheap when I sent mine in.

I rented one and became too frustrated with it for this very reason. I'm sure it could have been a specific lens problem, but I just didn't have the time to buy one and just hope it was a good copy.

35L/85 for me.

I've seen way too many bad copies of that lens for it to cost what it does.

my 50L kinda sucked on my 5d2, but once I got it on the 5d3, it's been tack sharp, even in continuous focus

Honestly, that's why I sold my copy when I did...I was afraid it would start crapping out on my and the resale value would plummet. I have considered buying one again, but my sigma 50 has done such an amazing job for me that I have no real reason to go back to the canon

The siggy 50 is a beautiful lens if you don't mind the terrible CA, some of the worst I've seen. I love my siggy 85 but the CA is also pretty awful.

The Canon 50/1.4 is much worse for chromatic aberration comparing the two near wide open.

I sold sigma 50, very soft by midway through the frame and focus was IMO not reliable at all. No chance of keeping up with moving subjects. Unfortunately, my 50L seems to have decided to be the same way - but it might be a microadjustment issue. It might also be a focusing-in-tungsten issue, since the focus does seem thrown off by incandescent light.

Funny you should mention this lens right now. Mine stopped AFing reliably shortly after getting the 5DmarkIII.

It will work for about 15-20 shots and then just stop moving. The AF motor just won't budge. Sent it in less than 6 months ago for repairs. Worked for about 3 months, and then stopped again. Sent it back for repairs last week. Came back but alas the problems persisted. Sent it BACK in this week and they tell me this time they are replacing the USM entirely. Hoping it solves the problem. We will see on this Saturday's wedding.

Although, I've only paid about $150 in repairs so far (thanks canon CPS!). The first repair cost me the money, and the subsequent two repairs have been free as they are considered "repair warrantied".

My 50L is too slow for processionals... Focusing has been temperamental... It's been to CPS twice for an 'electrical adjustment'. We have a Sigma as well which is pretty darn good... No issues (yet).
