p.4 #1 · Learn wedding Photography?

But because I am a nice guy (not to mention extremely handsome and sexy), I will offer up some "tips".

When I decided I wanted to start shooting weddings, I did three things.

1. I read this and other forums for weeks and weeks before I did anything else.
2. I bought all the right gear (two cameras, fast lenses, etc)
3. I practiced, practiced and practiced some more before I advertised to the world that I was ready to tackle a wedding.

I did not second shoot for anyone before I shot my first wedding. I jumped in and did the best job I could, but I was prepared both mentally and gear wise.

I have been a professional photographer for over 30 years prior to shooting my first wedding but I still had to train myself to shoot weddings.

Fascinating study in social dynamics at work here.

My advice: it would be to your benefit to practice situational awareness. Before inserting yourself into a situation, give consideration to how your personal presentation, communication, and/or behavior might be interpreted. Attempt to imagine how others will perceive you, and modulate your behavior to manage this perception in a way that will be beneficial for your desired goals. This will improve both your photography and your business.

I'm all about helping people... But I question whether or not they're really serious about it when they can't bother to put together a cohesive sentence in their quest. It's just lazy and disrespectful to show up asking people for help with something when you're not even willing to speak in full sentences, post images, etc...

Can you imagine what his emails to brides must look like? These are the kind of people who give the rest of us a bad rep.

Some of the best advice you're going to get, not only for your approach to this forum but any social situation.

Spot on Candice. People are so willing to raise the "mob mentality, bullies everywhere" flag in online forums. Undoubtely there are such forums, but I really don't think this is one of them. I think FM is full of thoughtful and helpful commentators but when a new face appears and spends three pages failing to ingratiate themselves or communicate effectively in anyway there is no imperative to take the poster seriously.

Actually it is one of them.

Marcus watts: Exactly. Thank you. I expect some of that. But to some degree I've been sharing tips I learned in over 20 years of photography for 3 yrs on here and expect the same in return.

Ive seen enough garbage on fm just didn't see why I should put up with people mocking me yesterday. Or ever.

Thank you jcolman and others. Many have asked my skill level. While its high I haven't shot many, weddings so it's somewhat irrelevant.

Im a lot less worried about my personality after this thread. Sheesh.

Jcolman you sexy man haha

How did you prepare yourself mentally? As Ive said, i don't think second shooting will work for me. Anything besides the three tips you mentioned?

Why wouldn't second shooting work for you? I am just curious.

By having confidence in my photography and people skills. I was video director for many years so I was use to dealing with people on many levels.

This is where you're mistaken. Some skills used in other photographic disciplines translates well to wedding photography. Photographers that excel in photojournalism and street photography, for example, often transition to wedding photography seamlessly, and excel. If you're not going to share any of your work, maybe at least tell us what kind of professional photography world you've been living in. Or not. At this point this thread is pretty much a joke.

p.4 #14 · Learn wedding Photography?

While I think this whole thread is largely a hilarious mix of misunderstanding and miscommunication, there is also a good bit of pride (on both sides) that is likely not warranted.

That being said, here is my advice. Beware, it has some hard truths.

1) Unless you plan on having sales and reception employees do all of your talking for you, you'll need to have excellent communication skills. I truly believe I got where I am today because I know how to be tactful but also how to be a complete goofball with the right couple. Your personality needs to be malleable. You also need to be able to write professionally, as many of your brides may be college graduates, who WILL write you off if you seem unprofessional. Based on what you've written so far, that's not a strong point for you, so you'll need to work on it.

2) As has been said before, you need to be able to know your gear front and back, and be able to use it proficiently at a moment's notice. That is all you get sometimes - a split second. Being able to take pretty pictures is one thing, but being able to catch moments (attractively, in poor light and perhaps an ugly location) is what truly separates portrait photographers from wedding photographers. If you're predominately a portrait or studio type photographer, this will be VERY difficult. No time for metering, no time for posing, no time for lighting changes, you have to be able to take any picture at any time.

3) You will need lots and lots of practice. Bar non, second shooting is the best way to do this. It gives you all the opportunities of being a main photographer, without the stress of having to do everything yourself. There is no real reason not to do it, unless you're already putting out lots of quality wedding work on your own and feel completely comfortable with it. Even then, it's a good exercise.

4) Equipment. Unfortunately, equipment can make a HUGE difference in wedding photography. Not necessarily in the quality of the images per se, but in what images you are able to take. You'll need a new(ish) dslr, and a good selection of fast lenses. Bonus points for multiple speedlites. Also, backup gear.

5) A great outlook and some solid endurance. After you've shot your first 10 or so weddings, if you don't love it, you're probably in the wrong market, because it will show in the images. You'll need to be prepared to be on your feet for up to 10 hours at a time, sometimes with no food, being constantly focused. THAT'S why you need to love it, otherwise you'll burn out immediately.

Mike,

What he said below and above is well put. I think what you really need to do is find a pro photog. See if he or she would take you under their wing.

Good luck with your decision.

But you really need to post your work. I remember when I first posted I got ripped apart BUT I learned and moved on.

If you were in California Orange County I would show you the ropes. But the only thing I ask is that you do what I say.

It's not "miscommunication". It's "lack of".

Hey Mike, you're the best man. Don't even bother coming her and asking for help. You don't need it. You're way above that. You've obviously got mad skills just from reading your responses. Why, we should all be so humble in your greatness.

If you aren't willing to accept critique and advice from those who have experience, and learn from your mistakes, you will never, ever excel. No matter what job or career field you are in. Period. End thread.

You need to buy a Nikon D800. Even if you blew the highlights you can recover at post. The DR is the best according to some charts. I think it even has a Wedding Mode if you look hard enough.
