Peter, your woodies look like they're downright happy to see you these days; I believe the first two are grinning - or maybe it's just the contrast with Jefferson's oh-so-serious cat ...
Joking aside, I love the third one; the water color and swirly patterns in the upper left are just beautiful...
A couple from today; my little creek down the hill from home, made with a 24-105L and polarizer, and a pretty big crop of a heron, with a 300 f/2.8 IS and 2x III extender...it's been a few years since I've used a 300 2.8; I'd forgotten the incredible crispness and contrast of the bare lens, and either extender hardly affects IQ at all...my 400 DO is quaking in the closet; I see comparison tests in my immediate future...

Thank you, Jerry, glad to hear you like the fall reflected waters in that shot.
I also do not hesitate to use 300 f/2.8 IS MkI + 2xTC MkIII combo as it is relatively light and it yields good IQ as your fine GBH shot illustrates full well.
For a few days now I have been trying to make a closer approach to a young Black cap night heron, however, to no avail. The bird is too far even for 800mm FL as the shot below illustrates.
In many spots the fall colours are now peaking, and the leaves have started to fall off quickly, but the problem is in getting that bird in the right spot.
Handheld 1DX + 400 f/2.8 IS MkII + 2xTC MkIII, about 50% crop.
Thank you Greg, I edited the main exif info into the image captions.
I am not sure trading 400 II for 600 II would be such a good idea for people who photograph sports and bigger/closer wildlife. However, if you are looking to get a well priced preowned 400 II, then it is certainly a very good idea.
The 400 II is my main lens, 500 II comes very close 2nd, and then the rest.
As the fall colors intensify, so it seems the quality of the photos. Congrats all. SoCal seems so drab now.
Peter, that's probably the first time that I see legs on your decoys. They must be real. I missed seeing your 400II images but I can well imagine the quality from the limited experience with my own setup.
Thank you, Shreeni......it's the environment colours that make all the difference now, the target itself is of secondary importance....just something to hang focus on.
1DX + 600 II
How do I put this delicately...I can't...when I look at your ground shot Peter I see the Drake's plump chest and BBQ pops into my mind, crispy skin, etc. etc. etc....I am a bad man, hungry tooooo
