Seems like Canon is throwing this against the wall to see if it sticks. It isn't like they would have invested much in it since it is pieced together from existing technology for the most part. If it doesn't stick, they aren't out much. No worries bean counters.

I wonder if anyone else had thought that the 5DIII and 6D should have switched name, i.e., the 6D should have been labeled "5DIII" and 5DIII is actually 6D. 6D is closer to 5DII than 5DIII, don't you think?

it's so close that it's not much of an upgrade, it is just a new lower tier so I think 6D makes sense

I am not sure this addresses this remark completely, but I noticed this comment in the Preview of DPR:
Well the 11-pt AF is made for the FF sensor then atleast Canon did something right. Plus it is sensitive to -3EV. Better than planting the AF system from a cropped cam. <ahem> d600 <ahem>
But single x-type point is still nonsense. Unless somehow the outer points are made more sensitive. The 5dc/2's outer AF points are pretty unreliable in AI Servo mode.

The catch and major regression to the 5d2 few reviewers seem to have realized yet (look at the specs!):
The one center cross point degenerates to non-cross if a lens of f2.8 or faster is attached - Canon made sure that the 6d cannot be used as a backup wedding/event body instead of the 5d3. So the 6d is an overpriced f4+ tourist landscape camera - just 1/4000 shutter and 1/180 x-sync don't matter in this case. Though wifi (journalism immediate upload, remote control) sounds interesting, it's a major disappointment even before comparison to the d600.

Don't have to and on that we agree. I don't think Nikon is perfect, nor is any camera that I know of today. If Canon would stop doing what they've been doing for the last 5-6 years I'd be happy, as I had been in the many prior decades of Canon usage. I don't like being boned by any company, and with Canon, that's pretty much their whole shtick now. In 2007 I was in NY talking with a Canon guy about the soon to be released 1D3 when it started; Canon's last minute change to increase the price of the 1D3 from the already published $3999 to $4499 was the tipping point. Ever since then, it's been higher prices, less delivery with corner cutting, no more superior gear (compared to the competition), just "enough to get by". ...Show more →
Wow. You really should just sell your Canon gear and move on. You have been beaten and abused enough already. Either that or get some therapy.

In Canon's nomenclature a lower number is a higher end camera. The 5DmkIII is the better camera from these two models, hence the 6D. Have EOSfun

I would not say the AF covers a wider area than competing products. The Image shown here and copied from the Canon website is a cutout. The real positions of the AF points are shown here on the third page (look for "metering area in viewfinder"):

I guess we all see things differently.
I believe the 5d3 (I know I go on about it) is an amazing camera. Was it $500 too expensive at the start? Yes I think it was compared with the competition *based on the spec sheet*. However, having had and used the camera for 4 months and taken 20k frames on it, my view was probably wrong. It's so much closer to a 1 series now that the increase was justified. It should have been called a 4d not a 5d. That was their mistake. It isn't a 5d really...
In the same breath the amazing sensor d800 gets lots of disappointment, especially from handling. One of my friends who has both takes the 5d3 to weddings every time.
I dunno... I sort of feel the 5d3 was worth the money now. I would obviously have preferred to pay less but I dont feel ripped off.
I do wonder how many of the people who say it isnt worth it have actually used one in anger. It really won me over.
I further wonder if the 6d will be the same, although the spec sheet for that camera seems to be so lacking in a number of areas that it's going to be tough to make up for...

Actually the 6D may be my entry into FF, I had planed for a 5D3, all really depends on my budget. I actually could do quite well with the 6Ds feature set, seems my needs are in the minority, but I'm use to being in the minority, I've gained considerable inner strength from living life seated.

Ah, you don't need to actually hold this camera to be disappointed in it, the spec sheet does that well enough.
Michael, you could very well be right though I seem to remember about 4(?) years ago a lot of people raging over the specs for the 5DII. Many think it turned out to be a useful cam.
Understand, I'm not holding my breath here, but given that both the sensor and AF are apparently new products, there is some small chance that something nice could happen - and no I won't bet anything on it.
I do absolutely agree with the general consensus that $2100 is an absurd opening price.

I think you got that one sideways! The center point operates in "high precision" mode with lenses having a F2.8 or faster max aperture. Slower max aperture optics--F4 or 5.6--AF in normal precision mode. However, both axis of the center cross are enabled for all lenses with F5.6 or faster. Same basic specs as most recent EOS AF arrays, save for the -3EV sensitivity...

Actually 4 sounds like "death" in Chinese, and 14 sounds like "certain death." That's why you won't find any buildings with the 14th floor listed in Hong Kong.
