So, you think Leica should add more field curvature, smudgy corners and gnarly boke? That is surely an opinion, but not one I share. Zeiss makes great lenses, and I love mine (I have about 10), but none of them can touch the 21SE, 28 Cron, 50 Lux ASPH and 90 Cron ASPH, IMO.

I would add Lux 35 ASPH FLE as well, it's hell of a lens

I would add the 24 Elmar, just fractionally better than the 21 Super Elmar IMHO, and an obvious candidate, the new 'Cron 50.

Leica "M" is first mirrorless with interchangeable lens. Simply put, its first FF base for any FF lens. Sony RX1 is super expensive compact with fixed lens, and I think unlike R1, it wont be even remembered well. Especially when its so obvious that Sony could do FF mirrorless (with interchangeable lens), just didnt want to. Tho I understand them, that demand would be extreme and ppl would probably stop buying any other mirrorless. It would most likely even harm A99 sales. Still dont like it, but thats for different topic.

Leica "M" is first.

Sony would have to make an all-new mount for a FF mirrorless ILC, unless they want to make native lenses that are nearly the size of a-mount lenses with adapters. It just isn't happening soon.

I bet the lenses are what held it back. The video camera would use different lenses anyway, a lot of zooms I bet, and the adaptor to the full size DSLR lenses isn't much of an issue.

I wonder if Sony does come out with an M offset, it is more of a Fuji X1pro than a Leica with out the mechanical linkage for focus.

I kind of believe it unfortunately... Check out those cameras available in Koln, look how some things
look unfinished, the buttons on the left, also the LCD is not fitting the are designed for it, it's smaller
and not centered. I hope that stuff will get fixed.

Hi Andrew, if the M is not up to spec, and the IQ does not meet or exceed that of the M9, I will not proceed with it I am expecting there will be delays, so this was the reason, to sell the older M9, and replace it with the M-M for now.

Any news on the shutter on either the ME or M? I wonder if it's any quieter than the M9.

I'm wondering this as well. Leica's M-E site implies that it's a very quiet camera, but this might just be marketing-speak to gloss over the fact it's likely pretty much an M9, with probably the same shutter, which wasn't all that quiet with that annoying buzz re-cocking sound.

The

" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">John Dooley
M video at least gives the impression that the M's shutter sound is not bad. Not super quiet, but not that loud either. And no sign of an annoying re-cocking buzz.

At first I was a bit cool on the M, but looking at the info a bit more closely, I think Leica has done a good job to refine the design. A fast processor, better, faster buffer, competitive sensor, hopefully quieter shutter action, accessories that offer additional functionality to those who will need it, such as the grip with the flash sync terminal, which I have sorely missed on the M9. The thumb grip is also a nice touch since it will be impossible to use the EVF and a thumbs-up a simultaneously.

Another 'M' would seem to be a logical solution, or his existing M9.

Now I'm kind of upset I missed out on a local kijiji ad for an R 180 f/3.4 for $500... Was thinking it would be a nice option on the GXR, but it sure would have been great on the new M.

I am just happy that my lowly GXR has a completely silent electronic shutter. Shouldn't this be a standard feature on the M, I wonder, now that it is using CMOS?

Is there some technical reason why modern Leica's are limited to 1/4000 sec.?

Nope, original M8 has 1/8000 and sync 1/250.

The 1/4000 shutters are also quieter. I'd imagine that they sacrificed speed for volume.

Interestingly, Leica has been touting the low volume of the shutter in the ME. I wonder if it is any different than the M9's shutter.

The shutter in the Pentax K-5 goes to 1/8000 and even with a mirror, it is extremely quiet - some have even said quieter than an M9. What might make more of a difference than the top speed is the sync speed.

Interesting regarding the ME as I remembered you mentioned something about that. Perhaps the ME uses the same shutter as the M (which was possibly updated?). I would think that would certainly be an improvement that would be mentioned by Leica specifically if so.

Okay, this is a cool video, regardless of how you feel about Leica or the new cameras.

It's a scanning shutter. Have you tried it on moving subjects?

Anyway, I don't see why the M shouldn't have it. It's just an inherent feature of video and LV.

So who is going to get one? We have Charles, Luka, Morty, possibly Ron?

As for me, I think my plan is taking shape nicely.

When the ME is available in a couple of weeks, I will get one (or a used M9 if the prices drop significantly) and keep the GXR as back up. When the M is available well into 2013, I will sell the GXR and keep the other ME/9 body as back up.

I'm liking the M more and more, but will let Charles and Joe88 be the early adopter testers.

Just read Yannidel's blog post about it, and he seems a bit reserved about it's image quality, at least in the sense that the new sensor might no longer have a certain Leica-look to it. I have to admit the images in the M brochure, from that perspective, are not the most inspiring. Too early to say. On paper at least, the M seems to address my main complaints about the M9.

Thank you for the link, Ron!

I personally am not very attached to a Leica look, because I don't believe it really exists. I know there are Canon looks, Nikon looks, Sony looks, but they keep on evolving constantly. The Sony nex color is related to my A900 color, but they are not the same. Moving from CCD to CMOS and a completely different supplier will have some effect about the color. I am more concerned about purely IQ issues, like banding, high iso noise, sensor cover cracking... you know, the usual Leica issues.
