What is the best way to shoot portraits outdoors when lighting is camera external flash,
Photography in the hours before sunset and in the shade.
Soft Box, Beauty Dish, umbrella white / black / silver.
It depends on the look you're going for: gritty, high-fashion, dreamy, classic, etc.
Some looks will be better done with hard light, others with soft light; some will need high-contrast, specular lighting, while others will do better with low-contrast broad fill.
The only constant is that off-camera flash almost always works better outdoors than on-camera flash, since there are fewer bounce surfaces available.
