If a poster invites C&C, is it acceptable to edit and re-post the image under discussion as part of providing feedback? On one hand, it is often the best (clearest/fastest/etc) way to offer an alternative. On the other hand, perhaps some people, even after inviting C&C, would object.

Josh is right. Be sure and ask first. It's just the respectful thing to do.
It's a judgment call for each forum.
On dpreview, the feedback I got was the opposite: that if the OP explicitly asked for c&c, and any edits were done respectfully and for the purpose of c&c, then it would generally be fine.
As I said, I can see both sides. An edited example for side-by-side comparison can often be more helpful than a lot of words alone. It may also offend some people. That's why I asked - to respect the rules for this particular forum.
I don't like it. An explanation will do, and I'll apply it on my own image if I feel it has merit. The exception is if the post is about a post processing technique and not the OP's final work.
