p.1 #1 · 800mm f/5.6 + 1D-X + 1.4x Extender = Apparently It Can AF!
Haven't seen this yet on FM, but Arthur Morris says the 800mm + 1D-X can AF with the Kenko Teleplus PRO 300 DGX 1.4x AF Teleconverter - and do it well apparently!
The main reason why I've been totally & utterly bored with the 1D-X news is b/c of the lack of AF @ f/8 for my 800mm. This would be a game changer for me with my planned camera upgrade though.

I've used this TC with my humble 100-400L and my equally humble 40D.
It worked with the tape trick, yes, but of course, my 100-400L would occasionally "hunt" for focus at times.

The combo 800L + Kenko 1.4xTC auto focuses "blazingly fast" ?
Let me see that now: since my bare 800L AF is generally not blazingly fast, perhaps I can make it so by slapping a Kenko TC on it. Damn.....the things one can learn on the net.

I tried taping the pins and using the 2X with the 400 DO on my 1Dx and it would not auto focus. I was hoping that it would since it was not reading the lens aperture but it did not even make an effort to focus.

I'd attempt to tape the contacts between the TC and the camera also. Also the TC to lens contact. The mere appearance of the TC in there could be the issue...

Reno . you cant tape the contacts between Body and TC. its only on the TC to lens side that there are the extra pins.
oh and Rgold, are you sure that you taped the correct 3 pins? its not the 3 pins on the raised side but the 3 at the other end . (bad description but if you look at the pins you will see what I mean)

I had read that blog post earlier this morning, what I found odd was that the same setup didn't work with the 5D3?? I would think that if this TC is non-reporting then it should work the same on both bodies. Also he said the camera reported 00 as the aperture on the 5D3. I would have thought it would have reported f/8 if it was somehow reporting to the 5D3. Has anyone else tried the Kenko on the 5D3?
I have the 1.4mkIII Canon and with taping the 3 pins I have got the 100-400 to AF on my 5D3 and 7D. It is not great with moving subjects but okay with static ones. The 7D won't focus with the centre point but it will focus with the outer points. The 5D3 can focus with all its points.

The AF of my 800mm f/5.6 works just fine with the combo Kenko 1.4X TC on my 5D Mark III. I tested that a few months back but I didn't use it because of the noise IS issue. Canon recently upgraded my lens to work properly and I can confirm it again, that it works fine with all cross-type points using both the Kenko or Canon 1.4X Mark III TC. Again, 3 pins have to be taped on the TC side.

I had the correct three taped but will try again if I have time on Sunday and see if I can get it to work.

There you go, Joshua had figured that one out 2 months ago . In addition, there was someone else on this forum who reported similar results with 5DMkIII at that time. Was that Ajay ?

It is a little off topic but I just tested (few hrs ago) my Ef500/4IS MKI with 1.4TcIII+1.4 TC Kenko with 5D3 to get an effective 1000mm. Surprisingly good AF maybe as good as if not better than that of 500 +2xIII with 1D4 combo.
A few pictures: 1600 ISO, 1/640-500sec, wide open, supported by mono-pod.

Yup 1dx + 1.4x Extender Mk II + 800 f5.6 does auto focus with taped pins. Now is it fast, no it isn't but it certainly is usable for IF's for large birds. There is too little light here right now, I'll try some shots from the kayak tomorrow.
Note Morris did say this combo worked, just not as well as with the Kenko tc and that I can't test. Yet

Hey, but make sure you click on his link to buy the Kenko
