My downloaded update has a .FIR extension which I could not open on my computer. Also, I cannot update directly to the camera because when I connect to my computer and turn the 7D on, I get nothing on the screen. Should I just trash the update?
When you extract the downloaded file, you will see a sub-folder titled "update-procedure-pdf". That sub-folder has a pdf document with detailed instructions that you need to follow.
The .FIR file isn't supposed to be opened on your computer. Simply drag/copy it to the root directory of a blank CF card and insert in your 7D. Monkey with the friggen menu 'n shit, selecting da last crescent wrench icon on da far right. Near the bottom of that screen is a line that says "Firmware version." Select that line 'n just say yes (by selecting of course) the subsequent FW 2.0 update. Don't monkey with the power or buttons 'til the update is kaput.
