Well according to FedEx, my 24-70mk2 will be here tomorrow, with a few hours to spare before I board the plane to Florida for the last Space Shuttle engagement

Sweet, I look forward to your stellar images and your review of the lens.
Yeah, well, of all things, FedEx has a delay on this package. Not sure it will make it on time

sadly Canon seems to have gone back to the give it the largest mega-stores first this time, instead of their recent (as of the last 5 years or so) way of delivering stock first to local stores and smaller local/mail order places so nothing on my end
check out the lens rentals review!
now we have the first known quantity review and it tested out WELL as in sharper than 24 T&S II on the wide and and sharper than the 70-200 II on the long end

And that's at f/2.8 versus the TS-E at f/3.5. It'll do even better stopped down to f/3.5.
(I suspect it will compare even better against the TS-E at really close range, near the minimum focus distance.)

Does anyone find the barrel distortion at the wide end problematic.
Correcting in post does cause some loss of that great resolution.

Every single 24-70mm lens, regardless of the brand, has that approximately 2% barrel distortion. So, there is no other alternative, you will have to put up with that if you want a zoom lens in that range. I am not aware that distortion correction will reduce the resolution although I could imagine it would be limited only to the corners though, right?

I realize the distortion is common in these types of zooms, but I was hoping for better, not worse. But at least it's not as bad as the 24-105. If that's the weakest feature of the new lens, then it certainly seems impressive.
Distortion correction should effect the corners the most.

I'd have to question any review that says the 24-70L II is shaper then the 24L TSE II. Do you have a link From other reviews i've seen, the 24-70L II is supposed to be marginally sharper then the old lens. Having said that, if it is sharper, then Canon has made me VERY happy I'm just not optimistic enough to believe that though!

I saw images of the comparison between the two lenses, 24-70 Mark II and 24mm TS-E Mark II, of a coin on photo.net, showing that the image taken with the Mark II image to be sharper. Frankly, having used the TS-E lens, I dismissed that as bogus until I read Roger's blog .

it is a bit unfortunate, for some shots you can live with the distortion though, it probably let them give it the otherwordly performance, it's harder to control general image quality aspects and reduce distortion at the same time, in this case, I'm glad they focused on all the rest first and then tried what they could for distortion last

well the canon mtf charts showed it to be sharper than even the new canon 24mm primes so it's not THAT surprising (although the canon mtf charts were when we all saw them )

Heck, I did the test and I didn't believe it either. I actually pulled 24 TS-Es and retested because I didn't believe it.
One thing worth mentioning, though, is our setup at 24mm is at 11 feet distance. Things might be different at infinity.
Yep, in fact I would be surprised if the new zoom kept its edge over the TS-E at infinity. My experience with past Canon and Nikon zooms is that they tend to be optimized for mid field performance more than infinity performance. I'm willing to be pleasantly surprised though.

Would be interested in seeing stop down performance agains the 24TSE (i.e. F11). I think in terms of distortion, the 24TSE will kill the 24-70LII, but I think that is to be expected and for where distortion is a concern, I'd still go to the TSE.

Shame on canon if they can make a zoom sharper than a prime with a 67mm image circle
I'll believe it when I see it verified dozens of times by lot's of different tests/real world shoots.
