the ones for sale in Australia are in a kit with the 5d3 but are being sold separate they come in a full retail box.
picked one up this morning the dealer had another 10 available at that time. it seems to be very well built and focuses very close and fast. seems like a good upgrade so far.
I'm confused, are they being taken out of the kits and sold in the white box like with the traditional 24-105? Or are they actually in a proper lens box and are being combined by the retailer as a kit with the 5D3?
Also would love to hear your first impressions with the lens

my trip on the first of oct I wonder if I will be able to get my hand on one before that date since I dont have any pre orders
You could order from the PRA Imaging site right now but the conversion will make it fairly expensive. I added one to the shopping cart and the delivery address lists all countries including UAE. Not sure if they will ship or how much it would be but always an option if you really need/want it. Maybe the delays have allowed Canon to get good stock ready for release and this won't be too hard to come by....or maybe not!! B&H lists "Limited supplies" coming.

Thanks Geoff, yes the price is much higher than US current price . So will wait and try my luck.
I admit I was obviously wrong with my assumption that Canon would fully redesign this lens during the last few months. It is kind of a suprise to me that they still release it in the form they announced it months ago with even the same (ridiculous) price tag. IMO it is a big bummer.

And you were a silly rabbit to think otherwise.......

It obviously takes much longer than a few months to fully re-design a lens or add IS to it. I'd guess they have most lenses and camera bodies in the planning stages for 1-2yrs. companies like Google have very detailed strategies laid out for 5+ years with specific technology they are working towards and when/what companies to buy.
And there is no indication that Canon has any problem with their recent pricing strategy. They haven't deviated from raising prices on the new lenses or camera bodies. Wishful thinking that they are going to reduce prices on new gear.

Unfortunately I will need to wait until a couple of price drops until I purchase it because there's no way I can justify dropping $2300 on it.

Sounds right what you are saying here. Not sure if Canon has such long term strategy without doing needed changes - a high MP FF DSLR might be an example where they made a change from the course they originally planned. But I agree that the pricing startegy seems to be written in stone there....for now.
I imagine just like the mkii 70-200 it'll have rebates and drops soon, with a spike in used sales and premiums for better conditioned units.
If I had to guess, I bet within 6-10 months of being readily available it'll have a few sales in the same price as the mkii 70-200. I can't remember if it was 1700 or 2000 I bought mine for. I know I got like 1700 on my mki when I sold it.
Basically, the early adopters are going to eat the price hike and the rest will wait.

It's not a ridiculous price tag for a pro lens which is at the top of it's game. This is a lens that photographers will make many many thousands of pounds from and it may well take some people away from using primes for the extra sharpness, allowing them to release capital.
If it really does turn out to be fantastic when it's reviewed, the price will be about right for early adopters, with a reduction over the coming year for those who don't early adopt.
It would be a ridiculous price tag if it's a total turkey, but the info we have right now is that's not the case and the ***value*** will be about right.
(fundamentally there's no such thing as a ridiculous price tag - just ridiculous value)

Hmmm, your part of the world is not that far away from mine . Please let me know where you can get one at that price. PM me if you feel that it is more appropriate, please. Thanks!

Yes, it is! One of my main interests 24-70 I/ 32.0oz 24-70 II/ 22.8oz Isn't a great amount but every bit helps in my situation. One of the most difficult decisions was the difference between the 70-200 I and II. Almost half the weight between the 70-200 f/2.8 and f/4. I'd love to have the f /2.8 II as it's a superb lens, but the f/4 isn't chopped liver either, I think it get's great exposures..

wow 32oz to 23oz is a pretty huge decrease! no longer is it the brick
much lighter than the 70-300L and even lighter than the 70-200 f/4 IS
and only the same size as the 24-105L and wow actually weighs a little bit less!
and basically the same weight as the 70-300 non-L, wow, that one weighed hardly much anything
EDIT:
hmm actually your numbers are off, the 24-70 I is actually 33.6 oz not 32oz and the new one is not 22.8 but 28.3 oz
so a more modest reduction but still, not bad to shave over 5oz off and it's be noticeably lighter than my 70-300L and not even 5oz more than the 24-105. Only 1.5oz more than the 70-200 f/4 IS.
