Well, the OP is not alone! After sending in two sets of images (for both of my defective Nikon D800s), I got the following message this morning:
Before having you ship your camera to our facility for evaluation, we will be forwarding your sample images to Japan for research. Unfortunately, this may take some time. Please use center focus points if you are experiencing issues with other points. It may take some time to receive an answer. As soon as we have any information, we will update you. Sincerely, Kimberly Nikon Support

I feel a lot better now. I thought they were playing games with me. It looks like that's their standard response. I don't think they have a clue right now on how to deal with this issue. I just don't know how long I need to wait. I am yet to enjoy this camera since I bought it over two months ago.

I did not receive this response. after a couple weeks of sending in examples to Nikon I was provided a label. Today after getting back from vacation i mailed the camera to them.
Here is what is in the email exchange to me from Nikon
After researching your question about the D800 focus problem that you are experiencing, we have received information in regards to the issue. Our service department has requested for you to send your camera in to be evaluated.
I didn't send photos or ask advice from Nikon. Simply sent the camera to Melville, with a description of problem, and my warranty and copy of sales receipt. Took about three weeks, came back even focus across left, right and center, and does not need much AF tune. Of course I did pay shipping to Melville, they paid to return it to me.
