p.1 #1 · Raven's Nest, Acadia National Park

One of my favorite spots in Acadia, "Raven's Nest" is almost secretly tucked away in the much less crowded but ever so beautiful Schoodic portion of the park. I saw a grand total of one car in Schoodic tonight, and for those of you who have frequented the more popular Mount Desert Island part of Acadia in August, that might be hard to believe!

Much of the more familiar coastline in Acadia faces east, so morning light is traditionally seen as the best time for landscape photography. However, the stretch of rocky shoreline that you see below actually faces west, so it is one of those rare Acadia scenes which, in the right conditions, gets bathed in late afternoon light.

Despite a large cloud bank near the western horizon, some high wispy clouds did their best to make me smile. Me and my fine deli sandwich were perched on a pretty small ledge for about an hour as the light slowly faded, and although the surf tonight was rather benign, I can't think of a better way to spend some quality time in my favorite national park.

C and C appreciated.

I love Schoodic Point. Just like you said. It's so much quieter and less visited. I was just in Acadia on Sunday. Took in the Canon Photography in the Parks program over at Jordan Pond House. http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/standard_display/Photography_Parks Got to try the new 5D3 and the 17mm TS-E.

Hi David,
Great composition and detail. As you know I was just up in Acadia for the first time last week. I did not get to the rest of the park and I was hoping to get some time over near New Harbor, etc. This shot makes me want to get up there in September or October and really take it all in. With the wife and kids in tow my shooting time was somewhat limited. Your a lucky man to have close access to a photographic treasure like Acadia. Thanks for posting

Super light David, I'll be checking the area out the end of September. Hope I catch some light like that!

Where abouts on the Schoodic Peninsula is Ravens Nest?

Well done, I like the colors and comp though there appears to be a bit of distortion toward the near/left side of frame. Haven't made my way up there this year but I know that area well - it's almost like you own it in the Fall but I'd never suspect that in the Summer - sweet.

Beautiful image, David. Very classic Maine look, to my eye and the light was outstanding (or at least your image makes it look outstanding). Very jealous of your calm evening waiting for the twilight.

Thanks. A simple gradient mask does the trick most of the time.

Thank you... looked REALLY promising but a big cloud to the west settled in . At first I was disappointed, but then I realized the light was going to be a little more diffused.

That must have been fun. Did you get a chance to meet local photographer Nate Parker?

Thanks Scott. It was an incredibly peaceful way to spend the evening, but one of these days I'm going to get here with some big surf.

Thanks Jack. Once school gets back in session the crowds in the park really thin out... even over on MDI. As the days get shorter and the temperatures take a dip, September and October is my favorite time of year here. I do appreciate how fortunate I am to live so close to Acadia.

It's not marked on most maps though there is a semi-maintained trail that leads to it. There is some really loose footing in the area and a considerable drop. Also, the terrain in there is being restored so I don't think the NPS likes to publicize its location. It faces west and is only about 30 yards off the loop road.

Thanks Mark. I have to admit I was surprised by how quiet it was there on this particular evening. And yeah... me and my wide angle lens were trying to fit everything in... hence the WA distortion

Thanks Jeffrey... I appreciate the comment. Not a bad place to hang out for an hour or two.

As always... thanks for the kind words. Saw the nice high clouds and jumped in the car to get here for what was indeed a very peaceful evening. Sometimes you need an evening like this.
