If it were me; I would install WP and the theme (Profoto etc) on local host on my computer, get it setup exactly how I want it to look, iron out all the kinks and install all the plugins I want, check it all out and make sure it's 100% and then install and repeat the steps on your domain.
Twice the amount of work but this way you'll have a very clean site without dealing with sub-domains etc.

That's one way to do it that would work.
you can also install a sub-domain on your server and install a separate copy of WP there.
We had a flash site as our main site years ago. Then added a blog in a sub. Then after a few years we decided to ditch the flash site and do just the blog. But instead of moving everything to the root directory we just added a tag in our index code to make the sub act as the root so even though our site lives at photosbynick.com/blog you can go to photosbynick.com and it just works.
