I can understand not waiting if it was several months or half a year away but Photokina is only a few weeks away, what's the harm in waiting?
It looks like wmb7 has been a member for around 2 years now, so chances are s/he already has a camera. Now if Canon announces a new 7D2, wmb7 has the option to either buy that or buy the current 7D at a cheaper price. Or maybe Canon will announce a new 70D with 7D AF. Who knows?
I wouldn't suggest buying a 2nd hand body either. Then again, I would never buy a 2nd hand electronic item. I feel like a dice starts rolling everytime I consider it. I suppose it's the same with new camera but at least you still have warranty.
While a 7D successor may be announced at Photokina, it is highly likely that one would be available until months or a year after such an announcement.
Those that assume a 7DII is not coming just because the 7D had some firmware update, must be oblivious to all the other Canon DSLR's that had firmware updates yet were still replaced by newer models. And those that assume a 7DII would not be much better than a 7D, don't know what they are talking about. Look at all the photographers that much prefer a 5DIII to the 5DII.
I would advise buying a 7D now, and a good clean used one from this site.

I'd be interested in an example of a Canon DSLR that had a major firmware update released, and then a month later Canon announced the new model of said camera.

No it's certainly not a 'minimum' figure.
As far as I can remember the rating comes from a batch test. So in a batch they will have some that die early <50k while others go on over 200k
The typicle one that comes up on here all the time is the 1D2 series bodies . Lots of times you see posts where someone's shutter dies at a very low figure of 20-30k (either new or a shutter replacement) while others have lasted way over the 200K rated figure .
Well I stand corrected and I apologize for the wrong figures. I know I've read from some of the sports shooters that their 1d series cameras go double and in a few cases triple + the rated lifespan. Like any other item it can last 3 clicks or 300,000+ One way to lessen the risk is to take care of stuff and or purchase from others who do.

It's not illogical to think that Canon will release a 7D replacement even after a major firmware update. It can be the last marketing trick to boost the sale before discontinuing it.
On the other hand, it also makes sense if there will be no announcement for 7D at Photokina. 7D's are still making sales and there is really no need for a replacement. I mean what updates you really need for 7D. I doubt we'll see a better AF. Better sensor?
Per recent rumors at CanonRumors, I think it's more logical to have 6D, a new budget smaller full-frame DSLR, especially when rumors about Nikon budget full-frame DSLR are heating up. A smaller body with reduced AF compared to 5D III, likely similar to 7D, at around $2,000? Very reasonable to me and I'll definitely get one, especially if it has a flip screen.
Still, I already have 5D III and 7D. It'll be tough to let go of my 7D.

If history repeats (which is very likely), some solid rumors will be heard at least a few months before the actual announcement date. Then, it'll be at least 3-6 months before the first shipment, which you'll have to pay premium for one.
Until now, I haven't really heard any solid rumors regarding a new 7D Mark II, unless it's the budget full-frame DSLR that they are talking about. If that's the one and it's announced at Photokina, you will likely get one for yourself close to Christmas time.
So, unless you currently have a capable camera in your hands, don't wait.
if you're not in a hurry it might be worth waiting until Sept, 18 - (Photokina) to see if the rumors are true

I would have to ask what it is that might come with a 7D2 that you want that you don't have with a 7D?
Continuous video AF?
As much as I like my 7D I think I'd be very tempted to wait until Photokina. While a MKII will likely take months to arrive after an announcement prices may start to drop on the 7D at that point.
