p.1 #1 · Critique my 4th wedding as amateur wedding photographer

Hi,

I shot my 4th wedding (over the last years) of my wife's niece as hobby.
The following shots are from the 'formals'. As i like to improve, any feedback is more than welcome!

In the future, i am considering trying to shoot some weddings as a side job, but currently I don't think I am good enough yet.

The shots were taken in a garden in Holland on an overcast day, I used a (silver) reflector for fill mostly. (Gear used: Canon 7D, 17-55 2.8 IS and 85 1.8)

As an amateur myself, I think overall you did a great job.

Being really picky here, I think #1 could use a fill light on the groom to avoid over-exposure on the flower. You can also use a solid background instead of a dark spacial background.

In #2 and #5 the bride's arm looks a bit stiff.

Also overall I would like to see more interaction between the two. For example, in #10 you can ask them to look at each other. Note that in most pictures the bride was looking at the camera instead of the groom.

exposure/skin tones looks fine, a couple of hot spots like #9.

#1, you know that by having the groom standing inside that his face is going to be under exposed. So either have him lean forward, or don't have him stand inside because composition wise it doesn't really do anything.

Posing in 4, 6, & 7 are a little too cheesy for me. 7 could have been interesting if you use the bicycle on the foreground.

10 is probably my favorite posing wise, but you should have separated the background a little more by using a longer focal length. Also the grass is a distracting element in this image. 85 1.8 would have been great on this one.

Hopefully that helps a little!

You found good light, I would just work on the compositions. Looking at your comps I don't know what you want to focus attention on. 4-6 are way too tight or not tight enough IMHO. Also verticals generally work best for single subjects. With couples, generally it looks nice to have some more space for them both in the frame. Very general guide of course, but I think it would apply here.

Not a bad set for an amateur wedding photographer by any means. The lighting looks good, and some of the poses are quite nice (others, not so much).

If I were you, I'd focus more on framing and content positioning within the photograph. There's some weird compositions, specifically 2, and 5.

I probably would have shot 10 with the 85/1.8 @ f/2.5

Overall, not bad. Keep shooting.
