p.2 #1 · Which size think tank retrospective?

I have the TT Retrospective 10 that fits my 5D mk II with battery grip and either 24-105L or 16-35L mounted. Then the other lens to one side and either my 50L or flash on the other side. I then have a TT Lens Changer 2 for both my 300 f4 L and 70-200 f4 L with 1.4 extender. Both bags in the Pinestone. This give me plenty of flexibility, but it is two bags. I don't usually carry both. If I don't need the longer lenses, I just take the TT R10. If I need the long lenses, I take the TT Lens Changer 2 and carry the body without at bag with a sorter lens mounted and swap around as needed. I've been very impressed with the TT product line and love the Pinestone material.

The TT R20 should work well with a mounted 70-200, but I haven't tried that combo yet. I have looked at the R20 at the local store, and I don't think it looks too big vs the R10, just deeper.

If you want to tone down the "Big White" look, get a black neoprene lens coat, protection and less "in you face" look.

Thanks for the offer John, but I beat ya to the punch.

While googling around for "10 vs 20" type threads, I ran into one from here that was archived from 2011. You had been posting in it, and there was lots of good info. Somone had posted a photo of the 70-200 mounted while being carried, and indeed it looked like a good, if not a bit tight, fit.

However, the shop called today saying that they had the 20 in, so I went on my lunch break. I didn't have my 70-200 with me, as I don't like looking like a crazy person at work, but i borrowed a 80-400 and that fit like a charm mounted into both bags, with no bulging up top. It is a bit shorter than the 70-200 mind you (with that I was surprised).

Anyways, putting both bags on the counter, I wasn't blown away with the size difference between the 2. I doubt that the 10 would be any easier at all for me to carry than the 20, so I got the 20 just for the extra working room in the bag.

While I almost never carry the 70-200, I do like me some old manual focus primes, and the 20 will hold a couple more than the 10. I doubt I'll carry it loaded mind you, a D700, FE2, X100 and a few lenses is going to be heavy enough.

I thank you for your help, this has been a great thread for me.

Glad it worked out for you.

The ease of carry is (for me) more related to how much glass I carry. It's a weight thing not a bulk thing.

Nice bags. I like the Retrospective series from TTP. Good stuff.

Very nice indeed. It's sitting beside me here at work, and I catch myself looking over at it more than I ought to.

I received tje R10 today and I am glad I didn't buy the smaller R7. The 10 is quite compact and I would not hesitate to use it for travel or an everyday bag. The quality looks great. I could not fondle them locally before buying as no dealers near me carry them. I am pleased with the Retrospective 10.

I have both the R20 and R30. I currently have a 5DII and 70-200 2.8 IS II. In the past I've had the 16-35 and 24-70. If you want to carry the 70-200 attached to the 5D, I'd recommend the R20. It will hold the camera and lenses inside, but the flash and accessories will probably have to go in the outside pockets. The R30 is larger, but not as tall. All of your stuff will fit in the R30, but the camera with 70-200 attached will stick up. This might not bother others who point out that the large flap will still cover the contents of the bag.

Thanks Gary
I take it that the 70-200 would fit ok on its own on the R30 as the extra space would be a bonus.

Have to say, this thread has seriously tempted me to get a R7, I've wanted a retrospective for a while and the 7 seems to tick every box. Just wish they were in stock in the UK somewhere.

Sorry for chiming in so late! I was in Monterey photographing the Historic/Vintage auto races this weekend. Vrooom!

If you ever have a fitment question, we're very easily reached via email or phone. It sounds like you have it sorted now.

Product should be back in stock in the UK and elsewhere within a week, two tops. Keep your eyes out, as some items may sell out again quickly.

Back to the original question - I would have likely recommended the Retro 20 as well. However yes, with the VRII version of that lens (being shorter than the VRI), it does fit so/so mounted to a body in the R10. It does stick up a bit above the edge of the bag and the lens is pushed down against the bottom. Not ideal, but it works fine in a pinch or if you're like me and find that neither of those concerns are concerns. It won't fall out of the bag, and I always set my shoulder bags down gently.

Cheers,

I just got he Retrospect 20. I was able to load it with the following.
Left side, canon 24-70 face down and 85 1.2 laying on top both with hoods reversed.
Middle, 5d mkiii with 70-200 f2.8 IS with hood reversed. Lens down
Left side, 600EX Flash, 16-35 with hood removed but could still place in this side
Back outside zipper, iPad 3 with Smart Cover and hard shell back. Tight fit.
Front outside section, lots of miscellaneous such as small Apollo soft box, several cases that hold my filters.

Inside has pocket on left and right sides. Very tight for flash and not possible for flash if lenses in left side. Will probably use these pockets for misc such as Batteries and shutter release.

Bear images is also off el Camino in palo alto. Not what you might expect inside. Looks more like the back area of a store, but they were very helpful when I was trying the different size retrospect bags.

I love the retrospective series...a little too much. I had the 10 and tried cramming too much into it so I moved to the 30. The 30 adds more lateral space while the 20 adds more vertical space. Now that I have the 30, it is filled nicely with all I had in the 10, plus some. Problem is, I can barely pick it up its so heavy with stuff. Seriously, its a matter of what you plan to carry with you. I would think the 70-200 combo would fit nicely in the 20.

I have a Thinktank airport international or a backpack and then could move a couple items to the retrospect.

Is it possible to set 70-200 IS II vertically in Airport International?
The lens is a bit taller 7.8" and the interior is 7.5". I belive one could make it work, but I just wonder is it too tight.

I really wanted Airport Security, but I've read a lot of airport stories so...
