I'm a member of those. I didn't join hoping to book weddings, although I do get the occasional inquiry through them. I joined mostly 1) to see if I could get it, 2) for the contests, and 3) for the recognition.

I have been with many of them, and the only one that really made any difference was the PPA. You can become a CPP and it seems to carry a little weight when booking clients.

If you like to enter competitions, they are good.
Anyone can join the PPA. Not even sure if you have to be a photographer. For WPJA, AGWPJA, ISPWP, etc... you undergo a portfolio review.
Not to say you're an "old timer" but we had a FB group where a bunch of old timers were touting the benefits of becoming a "certified" photographer. They were certified, but when you looked at their portfolios, they were so outdated... it pained me.

What benefits have you realized from membership in WPJA? I had a complimentary year and never really saw the point, but maybe I just missed something.

I have only really used it for the competitions. I placed a few times and have since lost interest.
$300 per year is a pill, but if you can win some awards with your work, and you want some plastic thingy's to stand in your studio (validation purposes), do it.

I think like Inku: recognition, contest and if i'm able to get inside. I add "just to say my wife -ehy i'm a member of ...-"
My doubts concerns if they are useful or not.
ok 300$/year is a pill but with that pill i can buy something else, maybe just pizza and beer
