Thank you, everyone, for weighing in. Interesting about the vignette. I shoot all of my portraits "on the street", where I find the subjects. I try to position myself so that the background is relatively dark, and the brighter faces pop out. When the background is bright, I almost always vignette like crazy to make the face the brightest object in the frame. I'll be more cognizant of this.

I'm fine with a vignette, but I thing that people are getting bothered by the fact that you brought it in tight to her hair and it ends up giving a weird halo effect.
