Thanks Maybe next time...
Well in your case Im pretty sure you could use D800/E without problems. But for most ppl its probably slight overkill. Not mentioning it goes hand-to-hand with PC upgrade..

Maybe they were disappointed that the D800 didn't magically transform them into great photographers.
DING DING DING!!! Way too many people out there think its the camera that does all the magic when the most important tool takes up about a foot of space behind the viewfinder!
Sure the D800 is cool and all but why plop down 3 grand when my skill level hasn't gone beyond what my D7k can provide. The one's who don't accept that fact will make Nikon a lot of money!

it is not a pick it up and shoot camera and I think several have found out there is a learning curve,,
I have had a camera in-hand for 50 years and the 800E certainly made me adjust a few of my thoughts,, for those that do not want to take the time to learn a serious piece of equipment it goes on the mkt,, they would most likely have been in over their head anyway,,
I'm like Will, loving mine and what all it offers,,
here is a 150% crop of a junior Ruby Throat Humming Bird during a leg banding session,,

Have we considered some less condescending explanations.
1. Too many people ordered from too many sources to get their hands on one. Now that they got it, they want to make a profit, increase their reward miles, or dont want to pay return shipment and restocking cost. Some actually want to help fellow photographers.
2. Are not satisfied with the AF and keep purchasing new ones in the hope that next one will not have the issue (all of them do to some extent, probably for different reasons).
3. The credit card bill is due and cash situation does not look too good!

^----^ all reasonable options.
I think there are prob a lot of full-size body users (d3/d3s) that thought that they could make due with a non-pro body but quickly found out that ergonomically, that is not the case.
I love the way my d3 feels in my hands, a huge improvement and speed boost over my d700.

Just a thought.
@derry1 -- awesome shot!
^ This, my D3s feels infinitely better than my D800. Although the D800 with a grip feels MUCH better than before.
