I know that you asked for <$500 but for ~$600 you could get the 80-200/2.8L...great glass!

totally depends on your shooting style. i am a landscape shooter and could not be happy without something wide. and i love to shoot tight portaits. for 600 you could squeeze in tokina's 12-24 and canon's 85 1.8 and have a couple very high quality additions to your kit.

I pretty much solely used a Tamron 90mm Macro in high school and college, love that lens and FL. But on a crop it'd be more like a 135 and I wouldn't like that as much.... so then maybe that 50mm Sigma samwise mentioned.

Matt, I would definitely get a used/mint Canon 70-200 F4, and I don't think you will be disappointed.

This,

Also the Tamron 17-35 is cheap. Whichever focal length suits your style the most.

I appreciate samwise's certainty, but I cannot concur, since despite years of time to fix the issue,
many users still report autofocus issues with this lens.

Another vote for the Canon 70-200L f4 (non-IS)

Its cheap, versatile, sharp and very very well made. Its offers a real taste of professional performance at an amateur price.

You can tell, I'm pleased with my copy of this lens, both on crop and full frame.
