I am looking for a wireless shutter release for my D800 and D300 that works in the radio waves frequency. I located a bunch of them on Amazon, but most product reviewers complain about they being too flimsy. Does anyone have any recommended models which they have used and found to be reliable? Also, I am not sure if they all need the 10-pin connector or are there some that just works of the camera's flash hot shoe and can be mounted on that. This will help me avoid a piece of cable dangling from the camera.
I've been using the Paul Buff CyberSyncs These things are extremely solid, and small. I shoot outdoors, at night. I've used these triggers in temps down to 42 below zero with no issues. They have a reliable 150 yard range, and I can get another 100 yards (250 total) by using two of them relay style. I've dropped a couple in a river and they were fine after Iet them dry. They use common AA batteries--I use Energizer Lithium Ultimate. Despite using them in the very worst winter weather of 40 below zero, or at temps over 100 degrees here in the Dakotas, they are still going strong after five years of very tough abuse. Never had a malfuntion or have one break. I got a 10-pin from FlashZebra. Highly recommend these if you are really rough on gear.

I am using one on my pro bodies for quite some time without an issue. And they have such a nice old scifi movie look . HK3_5178 by gugs, on Flickr
The RFN4s is a well made remote that works extremely well. With the exception of on the D800 it will lock the camera up doing any bracketing shots, you have to turn the RFN4s off and remove the battery from the D800 to get the camera to work again.
I really like this remote shutter release, but it is useless for me as I bracket all my landscape work.
I am back to using the Nikon MC30.

This is not a D800 problem. I have had no D800 lock ups except with the remote RF42 in bracketing mode. This is a compatibility use between the two devices.
The RFN4s work perfectly with the D800 in every mode except bracketing. It is a well built remote release and I have some very good wildlife photos that I was almost 100 ft from the camera.
This remote stays on my D800 except for landscapes, where I bracket, then I go back to the Nikon wired MC30.
If a person wants a wireless remote and doesn’t do a lot of bracketing I would highly recommend the RFN4s, it is well built and has a nice low profile on the camera. I don’t like a remote that uses the flash hot shoe.

I'm tired of replacing my Phottix wireless receivers after every 6 months of light use. What amazing garbage.
I shoot a Canon 5D. (original)
I don't need fancy timing or bulb features, and I'm not able to go with a radio-flash system right now. I just want a DEPENDABLE wireless shutter.
From this thread, I figured the RFN4s was a good choice, but it isn't made for Canon. They sell someting similar called the RFN4, but the receiver is not exactly the same. Would this be good enough?
More importantly, can I depend on this to actually work after a few years of light use?
