I'm looking for a good insurance package for my photography gear. My situation is somewhat unusual... I'm a US citizen residing in Taipei for 9 months out of the year.
Three months a year I'm back in the US. I have a US tax id for my photography business, US telephone number (skype), and a mailing address. I'm needing to insure about $50,000 worth of camera gear.
I'd call camera/photo insurance companies in both the U.S. and Taiwan. Ask questions.
It's not that you're an expat that matters (I live in Germany; insured in Germany by a German company)-- it's that you need to make sure the underwriters cover you during the time you're not in TK country. Most good camera insurance covers worldwide... but it depends where your office/home is, and may consider you to have two offices depending on the situations.
This is the kind of thing asking a lot of questions to the insurer may help with.
Thanks both of you. I'll check clements, am I wrong to think they will be relatively expensive? Expats seem to get gouged more than any other demographic group here in Taipei.
I have several emails out to Taiwanese companies and the PPA, will see how that goes.
Clements isn't cheap compared to similar coverage domestically likely because the pool is smaller and risks are higher. I know more than one FS colleague who lost everything when local unrest required immediate evacuation with one suitcase. Clements covered the losses.
How much of $50K the gear do you haul back and forth? If most of it stays overseas then it might be cheaper to separate local coverage for what stays there all the time if it's the bulk of the gear.
Also In addition to PPA which is domestically focused you might check photojournalism trade associations who are more likely have a deal with an insurers which offers discounted worldwide all risk coverage.
