Winzip has been sending me info on registry optimizer software and if one believes all these ads we would go broke. But I am wondering if this is a gimmick or is it a good thing? I do the free scan shows some errors then to fix I have to buy

It's probably finding broken registry entries for apps and files that no longer exist. Generally that is nothing to worry about. Are you having some serious computer issues?

What "registry optimizers" mainly do is clean out obsolete or unused registry entries left behind by earlier versions of programs you've installed on your computer, or from programs you've uninstalled. They seldom do any damage, but also rarely do anything meaningfully good. It's mainly trivial "housecleaning" that won't appreciably improve your computer's performance.
While they're not exactly a scam, I don't see any reason to pay for a "registry cleaner". If you're really intent on trying one, some antivirus software vendors (like Norton) include one as an incidental extra in some of their packages, and there are lots of free ones available on-line from various sources.

Brings back the memory! I think I used similar tools from Norton back in Win 95 days...
Usually when one installed too many softwares, Windows loads too many useless components at startup:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (64bit Windows only)
You can also use "msconfig" or "services.msc" to check what services/softwares will be loaded. It's hard to tell what's causing the freeze without detailed information, perhaps you can check the "Event Viewer" to see what kind of errors the OS had right before the freeze.
