What better way to test a new lens, some BIF with Nikon's oft criticized D7K 39pt. AF
Handheld heavy crops (modded BushHawk) SOOC. To say I'm thrilled with my 1st grabs
might be an understatement. Did I get 100% in focus shots, no...more like 75. We'll get to
know each other a little better over the next few weeks hittin' the junior rodeo events. Gotta
say, having constant f2.8 in this range will be great. This replaces my 70-200 VR II/TC-14E II
as I found myself in the 230-280mm range 90% of the time. 2X the SS?? can't stop smilin'
These looks great Will.. I am going to say #1 is my favorite with the back illuminated feathers. Pretty sweat looking. I am eager to see more of your work with this lens over the next few weeks.

Thanks, Chris Tried a little TR practice with an oldie but goodie...
Will I shot with the previous version of this lens until it took a plunge into the San Francisco bay. To say I love the lens is an understatement. Best combination of focal length and aperature. It also takes a 1.4 and 2.0 tc vey well.
I've been eyeing this lens for quite awhile. Glad to see you are enjoying the results. Looks good so far, any noticeable difference between speed of focusing? I constantly find myself needing that 250mm+ and the 70-300 as good as it is, ain't 2.8.
A timely post, TM, thanks. I'm considering this lens for my new D800E and the only worry I've got is how hand holdable it'll be while on my boat (it'll be a whale-centric lens). Please keep us informed on how you're gettin' along with it.

5 minutes before it went for a swim
Holy crap, Bruce! So sorry to hear that...if that shot was any indication of it's IQ, that'd be really tough to take.
I'll pick up a 1.4 for Bosque BIF this Fall...as 420mm has been my M.O. last 4 years down there. Thanks, man.

Good stuff, looking forward to hearing more.
Gerard
Thanks, Gerard! I was using the AF-S 300 f4 but would run out of light the last event or so. AF's been great on the
D2Xs and D7k so far, I'll be using the D300s/D3 this week and will no doubt post some results. It feels good in hand.

Cheers & good shootin'!
PS: How's the OS working out out for you? I think it has a "whale" mode....OS (position 2) I did some drive-by grabs from the rolling P/U
that came out sharp as a tack/steady in the viewfinder. I'd take it over the 200-400 any day, f2.8 and faster AF.
...and now if I could only find the plates to print the money
Thanky, John. Bill me Later to the rescue (6 mo/zero interest) Print sales will pay it off it in a few months.

Thanks TM! Is there an optional (and of course, directional) Breach Now! button as well?
I'll pass it on to B&H that you have a commission coming, looking for mine this next week. My wife, kids and grand kids have a little different take on it. I chalked it up to my Birthday gift early, anniversary gift, and that Will told me it would improve my lifestyle, thereby helping them, somehow.
In case the comiision does not arrive I'll throw an "ATTA BOY" your way and buy a brew should I get out your way.
