this is about the dumbest idea i heard in a long time. i am sure they then bother customers with 20 pages long NDA about not sending screenshots of the unfinished shots.

I think that's the point of it: to cut down on unnecessary work. As I recall, the Big Name said [along the lines], "the client pays us to work our magic on the album pictures, not the proofs, and when the client sees the difference in appearance between the online gallery and the album pictures then they appreciate our talents all the more".
