Too funny...it was just that I was reading back over the earlier posts and found a couple of comments from the same poster that just made me cringe a bit...
The crane in-flight looks really clean and sharp...well done
Just got finished mixing up some chemicals for the "analog" side of photography, now that I have my Canon 7 kit ready to go (35mm f2, 50mm f1.4, 100mm f3.5). Going to be shooting with it up in Boston, either Friday or Saturday, then back to Newport for the Tall Ships event until the 9th.

Wow, Edd, that sounds like we gonna be regaled with some excellent tall ship pictures soon. Have a whale of a good time.
Here's something a bit different, handheld 1DMkIIN + 400 f/2.8 IS.
(The background bokeh was given off mostly by some man-made structures in the harbour where this shot was taken, interspersed by a few trees.)
Thank you, Jerry, a master I am not, just an old hack with years of experience and 100,000s shots of practice.
Yes, 50D + grip + 100-400 is a significant burden even for a well conditioned young buck. I think the key is in a slow and gradual start, building up strength slowly but surely, every day (or a week) trying to do just a wee bit better than the previous week.
I got my 100-400 in yr.2005, and when I mounted it on 1dMkIIN, I felt the setup was way too heavy for handheld use. Oh man, my arms hurt and I thought I was over my head with it. Lo and behold, today I can even do 800L handheld for up to an hour or so.
I guess nothing good happens overnight except a dumb ass luck lottery win.
I guess it's time for me to slide sideways into this ete-mor Canon thread. We had thunderstorms as natural fireworks for Independence Day, but before they arrived I walked the dog, trying to follow shade where possible. Along the way I spotted two lazing cats, and upon depositing Photon at home, I grabbed the trusty old 5D2 with 70-200/4 L IS and ran back. I was lucky enough to find both felines still reclining in their chosen spots. They each beat a retreat when I tried to get closer, but fortunately I made my approach shooting.
VW Microbuses have more than enough ground clearance for cat shade.
Some cats will lie in the noon sun on hot humid days. I'd be the one under the bus.
Good grief Jess, it has taken you a while to find this thread.
However, I like your quintessential summer images. Some cool cats photographed by Mr. Cool Cat himself.

Ooh, and Jefferson's makes "Three Cool Cats" (Leiber and Stoller, sung by the Coasters, loved that bass)!
Peter: The Tall Ships event will be much different in scope and sequence from the America's Cup races, so I'm hoping that it works out for me photography-wise.
Early morning garden shots...stuff is finally growing, must be the heat...shot with 5DMkII with 100L IS macro.
Good effort and good results, Psych.
The heat wave is sure upon us by the Great Lakes, and the atmospheric haze + high glare/low sunlight intensity do not help certain kinds of shots.
The terns IF are particularly vulnerable to lacking light, thus this evening I struggled to get something half-decent.
