p.47 #1 · Summer photography with Canon equipment

@ Larry (Cicopo), your IF aero shots are wonderful! Brought back memories of youth, early days of building scale planes; balsa wood n silk, RC and the like...your last P51 shot is sweet, all super clear!

Two of my favs from my building/flying days were an F4U Corsair and a P51 Mustang, both with 5' wing spans; those were fun times! And your comment regarding shooting racing with A-1's and manual glass, my 1st SLR was an A1; still have it and it works fine even today; shot some surfing, drag racing and a few NASCAR/Winston Cup races in the late 70s early 80s; just spectator stuff...you are correct, our new digital/AF gear is quite amazing, quite helpful indeed

@ Rob, your daffodil image is kinda surreal almost haunting, I really like it! And your springtime landscape is simply beautiful, the detail, light and composition, colours, touch of fog/mist...wow!

@ skibum5, great macro images, super sharp and certainly creepy/spooky in a good way, the macro world is wonderful and your captures crystal clear; love the detail in the eyes. I can hear that soon to be devoured little fly saying "Help me, help me!"

As said before, great and inspiring images in the thread, thanks everyone for posting...I really need to get out more!

Jerry

Yes, Skibum has outdone himself with that superclear macro action....bravo.

A wonderful landscape, Rob, and a masterful use of sunlight.

@ PetKal, Thanks Peter.

Like the Vintage Rust, The straight on shot but with the shadows showing the shape of the valves and terrific colorization.

burningheart, Thank you for taking time to comment. You saw in my shot exactly what I was going for. I loved the hard shadows that showed off the shapes, and of course the color and texture (thank you mother nature).

Very serene and relaxing. This image has the full spectrum of shadow and light and is very pleasing to my eye.

Also, the 28-300L probably has a similar AF response to 100-400 ? Like, not exactly a speed demon ?

I'd say that's pretty accurate especially because I usually shoot 2 bodies all day long at these events. This year's combination is the 1DlV / 28-300 L IS and the 7D / 100-400 L IS. That gives me good flight line coverage plus some reach for the shots away from the flight line. Some pilots are very comfortable flying with other planes in the air & circle around making low passes or touch & goes while others prefer to fly off into an area away from the action for their flight. I'm off today for day 1 of a 3 day aerobatics competition where all the flying is done up high & well away from the flight line making things difficult even with my gear, but they appreciate the fact it's not a great photo op & accept the results. I still have some great take off & landing opportunities IF they do their part. Some of the planes are so powerful they take off in a very short distance, across the runway instead of along it with no worries to wind direction.

Diffuse light and almost no wind today, a good time to photograph butterflies with my trusty old 5D and the 100/2.8L.

Today I have finally taken a break from all that 1DX AF testing as well as schlepping heavy lenses around.

Here is an unlikely setup for a floral type action (sunflower patch): 7D + 24L.

Those are purdy Peter
The 24L looks like a great lens...24mm was a fav back in my film days...really nice colours n contrast!
And from a 7D...hmmmm!

Here's another heavy crop from yesterday's neighborhood shoot...a bit of artistic license taken with Lightroom to lessen the harsh high noon light...50D and 70-200 f4L IS.

From today's event, and again I credit the equipment because it wasn't fast paced. The camera is set so that the ISO will change (new to me but I really like that feature) to let me shoot my "basic" settings. These were shot in pretty low light for this type of work, and I had to use +2 of EC or a bit either side of that setting PLUS depend on the auto ISO keeping things happy. 1DlV & 28-300 L IS set for a Tv of 1/640 at a base ISO of 400. The built in software chose anywhere from ISO 1000 - 4000 during the shoot. (after the official part of the judged event is over several pilots will do what is called 3D. Anything goes in 3D, and the crazier the routine the better. I can't begin to describe the insane things they do, not do it with still photos because it's very fast paced.)

ISO 4000 (as chosen by the camera's software)

http://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-oIgDgDAd31Y/UDgigo11I3I/AAAAAAAAPY8/w9HjFDA_lD0/s1024/INGR6183.jpg

ISO 1600

http://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-o_0B4DXlxKI/UDgiqTgwP6I/AAAAAAAAPZc/oscKY-riwfo/s1024/INGR6285.jpg

And ISO 2000

http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-WFZyBP3GqBY/UDgivYqFamI/AAAAAAAAPZs/dfiWt-4slv0/s1024/INGR6296.JPG

And I've done some basic exposure corrections to the jpg's too. Had I relied on one of the bodies that didn't over ride the ISO setting none of these would have been usable.
