Thank you MrKyle, Fred and 15Bit....I am glad you like those shots.
Very nicely done Egret, Fred....you are clearly far from a novice to shooting birds.
That combo you have used is quite powerful, I think: 700mm f5.6 and one can carry it with ease.
I have been testing the 1DX Servo Mode since I got it last week. We have more choices now to complicate our lives. So far the best setting are the default and case 5 depending on how the birds behave.
I have not tried the 600 II but find the 500 || well balanced and light enough to retire the monopod for the entire day.
Really nice image of a Great White
I'm guessing the Bolsa Chica Wetlands, northern part near PCH and Warner Ave or elsewhere?
Did you shoot early morning or late afternoon/evening?
How's the bird population doing these days?
It's been a few yrs (4 due to health issues) since I've been there, usually shoot from the bridge or the north end; wheelchair access wasn't the greatest last time I was there so my opportunities are limited. Finally picked up a 300 and 1.4x, and a 50D from here on FM, hope to get down there this month. Will probably check out the ponds near the Huntington Library as well!
Hi Jerry,
You nailed it!
It was my first time there and it was a foggy morning in Huntington beach. There were not many birds but I was able to catch some in flight that day. I was walking through the main trail but wondered how it would be to shoot from the bridge.
A few from around my woodlands and gardens. The hummers were with the FD 400 f2.8L, and the rest with the EF400 f5.6L...a hand-held God-send compared to that f2.8L...

Hi Fred,
The bridge gets a few flyovers but not as many as I'd like and mostly smaller birds; larger egrets, etc stay pretty much to the north end. The bridge's railings are good supports, and there usually is a fair amount of marsh/grass about the entrance and exit; more on the PCH side. I've not traveled the outside or inside main trails, they're just to uneven or holey for my wheels.
Have you made it to Newport Beach's Back Bay? It's a great place to shoot, lots of walkways (to walk or bike), beach areas to shoot and you can rent smallish sail or paddle boats also; loved sailing n shooting there back in the 70s
I miss the beach area, one of these days I'll make the effort to get down south your way, haven't been to San Clemente, San Onofre or San Juan Capistrano in quite awhile...perhaps late this summer or this winter.

Good Evening Peter & Crew,
Greg and Cam: Thanks for the kind words/comments...sometimes the planets line up just right for a short time...
I think I'm going to follow Jerry's (StillFingerz) lead and pull the FD 200mm f4 Macro out of the locker for a bit. The rest of the gardens are producing, so some shots are possible. We ended up planting three sets of sunflower beds this year; two for us and one for the deer herd. They played nice with those but ate the entire bed plantings of tiger lily's; full bloom and height to gone in one night...

Fred reminded me to show something to the regulars of this thread, and to Psych specifically who is looking to get 500 II lens. The question always arises: how well does 500 II perform with 1.4xTC ?
I think the combo 500 II +1.4xTC MkIII works very well. Here is my IQ test target....no ISO charts, no $ bills. Shot with 1DsMkII handheld at f/6.3 and 1/1000 sec.
It performs very well. I have to constantly check if a photo was taken with the lens bare of if it had the extender attached to it. (Looking at 100%)
Today I took some pictures with the 2x III extender. (Canon 1D Mark IV). I will post some later.
Here is my 14-year-old handholding the 500 II + 1DX. Easy!

That picture almost killed me. ....Fred, your daughter is having a lenshold very similar to mine.
