I guess that was my question, do people still use 800 wide monitors? Do they still sell them? I last used one that small in the late 1990's. I think I had a Trinitron 21 inch by 1995 and my NEC2690 is getting pretty old.
Anyway, I am not sure what they are seeing anyway at such a small size. I have no access to such a monitor myself and have no way to prepare images for this audience. The images I process in ProphotoRGB at 5000 wide probably look pretty strange on an 800 wide sRGB screen. My brand new Toshiba laptop is a pretty poor place to view photographs.
"I was just wondering if you could still get an 800 wide monitor,"
Probably not, but I use a chunk of screen real estate for sidebar in the browser and for my tool palette in PS, and I don't want to have to scroll horizontally to see your photo (or anyone else's for that matter).
Why would I want to alienate any portion of my already meager viewing audience?
If I were making 800 wide web posting my main deal, I would probably shoot at the smallest jpg res my camera makes, and process 8bit sRGB. Even so I would need to still do a lot of downres. I would probably get a dedicated low res screen for the purpose. Maybe I would buy a low res camera as well. My Nikon990 was overkill for 800 wide.
But I would not bother to take photographs if that were the case.
