p.1 #1 · Mamiya RB67, is this a good price?

Found an RB67 that comes with a 50 4.5, 90 3.8 and a 180 4.5. Also a grip, majestic tripod, couple 120 backs aluminum case a few filters and other trinkets. He said he would let go for $450.00. Does this seem like a fair price to you?
Thanks in advance....

If the gear is not totally worn out, i.e. are in well working condition, it's a steal IMO.

Price is right, even if it needs seals, which you can replace yourself. Check the leaf shutters on the lenses though..

Make this one check: Look at the focusing knob shaft on the right side of the camera right where the cocking lever comes close to it. Check to see if there is any evidence that the cocking lever has actually been striking the focusing knob shaft--that is a sign of extremely heavy or rough use. These cameras have been built to be indefinitely overhauled, btw, although a factory overhaul is not cheap.

What do you think of the Majestic tripod? Is it single or double legged? They are monsters! I've had my double leg Majestic since 1971.

Check on picking up the 150mm soft focus lens. It comes with disks, that fit inside the lens. You just unscrew the lens to fit. The lens is designed to throw both a sharp and soft image. The disks control how much of the soft image is used. It makes a gorgeous portrait lens. The effect can be approximated in PS, but the lens has a special quality. Bokeh is also very nice.

I loved to shoot outdoor portraits with the RB. I used a 400ws Lumedyne head in a soft box. With synch speeds to 1/500, it was easy to balance ambient and flash.

That was a real steal. I have had mine for years and it is a great workhorse. Just purchased the Leaf adapter for mine so I can now use my Mamiya 22mp back on it.

I purchased an old RB years ago when I was in college. It was just too much of a beast to use on location without a tripod. Picked up a Hasselblad about five years ago, and it's what I should have had all along.

But the RB is a tank of a camera. You can toss that thing off a building and it'll get up and dust itself off ready for the next job.

Enjoy!

Cheers,
Sid

I also had an RB whilst at college. Brick of a camera, but great quality images. Needed a heavy solid tripod for landscape work
