They are not the some subjects in most cases, so it's hardly a fair comparison. At web sizes and notwithstanding DOF isolation limitations, the latest generation of mobile devices is quite capable at approximately normal angles of view.
The ergonomics can be rather ridiculous though. Lately I've seen people holding their giant iPads up in the air to photograph landscapes.
