p.2 #1 · Wait for the D600 or pick up the D700 now?
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. You are asking if you should wait for something that is coming out, but you don't know when. When and if it does come out you don't know what it will be like.
If you are willing to wait, go for the D99000. It will have a built in pool and water slide. YES, shape shifting will be perfected in that model. It will even include sauna and hot tub. Included will be a 15 to 5000MM lens with a constant f1.2 aperture. Yes, keep waiting. That way you are no competition to any of us.
p.2 #2 · Wait for the D600 or pick up the D700 now?
You won't see the D700 for anything close to $1K for a long, long time.
Even if the D600 comes out at $1500 USD (which I personally doubt, which probably means it is true), I think the D700 would drop to about that price or maybe $1300-$1400. It looks like the D600 is essentially an FX sensor stuffed into a D7000 body, so there are some advantages the D700 will still have.
p.2 #4 · Wait for the D600 or pick up the D700 now?
I'm leaning toward the D600 myself. If the rumors and pictures out are accurate it would become my new primary bodyand put my D7000 as backup. High ISO handling depending of course.

A bird in hand is worth two in the bush... you can use your D700 to make images now while the D600 is still rumorware. I agree that the specs for D600 is really attractive but think of the waiting time for it after (if) it is announced.

Yep, beat me to it. Many people that placed pre-orders for the D800 in Feb. don't even have them now. If you can wait until possibly 2013 to have one then go ahead and pre-order. It should actually be a hotter seller than the D800 when it comes out.

lol. I see a lot of folks with obsolete D700s trying to steer this guy into joining their obsolete technology club. I think they're jealous that they're stuck with their ancient camera and you have options.
Wait for the D600. It will be worth it most likely. Only a fool would be paying any more than $700-$800 for a 5+ year old camera that is multiple generations behind in technology particularly when the D600 will be out for $1500-1700. Used D700 prices are patently ridiculous and i would only get the obsolete D700 if you can get it at real value prices.

+ A Miilion!! Took the words right off my keyboard! BTW Thanks for the tip as I have just preordered my D99000, Just how big do ya think the pool will be, anyway? Will my D800E batteries work? Probably not for an Olympic size pool

Keep in mind that Canon's 5D3 just caught up to the D700 in AF and ISO performance, yet costs about twice as much ($3500 new vs a gently used D700 at $1800). I'm not a neutral party since my wife and I have two in total, but if you think the D700 is overpriced for what you get, you really should look around, because there's still very little in the full frame world that competes with it. And for the record, the original 5D is almost a decade old, yet lots of folks who shoot professionally and for fun would agree that it's an excellent value for full frame entry at $800.

Stuck? If I sold my 3 year old D700 today I'd get $1700 for it. So at a total cost of $600 for 3 years of use, I hardly feel stuck. But perhaps you're right, if I sold the D700 and bought a D600 for even money (after saving the money for half a year until the D600 was in-stock), the depreciation from the D700 would hurt me so much I might not be able to go to Starbucks for a week or two.

D700 will be 4 years old next month, and it's only one generation behind current products. Even the 5Dc, at 7 years old, still sells for $700-800. Both are not the latest and greatest, but I've never looked at a great photograph and thought it could be better with a D800 or 5dIII.

I can get a used D700 for $1500, but with the announcment of the D600, would it be smart to wait until that is released and then see where the pricing falls for both the D700 and D600?

It will come with a battery that recharges from carbon dioxide in the air. If you are willing to do without the hot tub and sauna, you can get an olympic size pool and poolside bar.

TROLL TRAP ALERT!!!!!
yeah listen to this guy. Stop shooting now and wait for a camera you know nothing about. Also to note. If you need FPS the D600 will be the camera for you. because the 8 fps of the D700 is certainly not enough.
If you want the best of course. Also I'm sure the D600 will have the exact ergo and button placement of your dreams. This doesn't matter of course. Because its a D600.
I'll be honest I will wait for a D600 or a D800 to compliment my D700 since im stuck with it and all. But honestly the Mega Pixels is hardly the reason to upgrade. As a matter of fact my buddy just picked up ( after a loan ) his 80mp PhaseOne and says its more difficult to work with than he could every imagine. Maybe he should wait for the PhaseTwo.. lol .

D700's useres keep trashing the D600 because now we don't have to buy from them if we want a cheap Nikon full frame camera.
It's so hilarious.
For me:
Used cameras = Used Lens = NO
for the record I stated I would keep my D700 and buy a D800. Im not sure where you assume everyone is trying to sell. I and many others have no plans. See, some of us use our cameras and find that upgrading solves nothing. Doesn't offer a better product to the client, may or may not be faster. Don't want to spend money on memory challenges or a computer that will better . I for one will keep my D700 and also buy a D800 for more options.
what is hilarious is you calling the D600 Cheap.
be were you are at, what I imagine is a small market you might see the camera in 2014rre
