The 50/1.8 is a pretty poor lens, I wouldn't bother with it at all. I also recommend the 50/2.5 macro -- an amazing lens for not much more than the 50/1.8.

I understand your reasoning and how you got into the 1D -- I'm sure you got a smoking deal on it, especially if it lacks a charger! The cheapest way to start getting some images is to buy a slow Alt lens such as Pentax (or other brand) 50mm f/2 in M42 screw mount, and a "M42 to EOS" lens adapter that can be had for around $5 -- that will be a total of under $50 (maybe $25!). The adapter will take time if you order from HK or China, so you may want to pay more and get it faster. This will allow you to buy any used M42 thread mount lens in Av or M modes, and these lenses can be really cheaply purchased! Next, look for a 28mm f/3.5 for a wide angle in the screw thread.

Later you can start buying auto focus Canon lenses like the 17-40/4L, which is equal to 22-52mm on 35mm cameras -- that's going to be great for landscapes.

I also agree -- don't bother with a CF card bigger than 2GB -- you don't need it. You could get by easily to start with a 1GB for those small image file sizes. 4 goes into 1000 how many times?? (250!)

You can get started on the cheap and have a lot of fun doing it.

Some of the technics available for cheap landscape lenses is to use which ever lens that you have, mount the camera in portrait mode on a cheap monopod and take 4 shots about 15-20 degrees apart. Get a copy of photoshop. CS3,4,5 whichever you can buy cheap, shoot in raw and stitch with photoshop. This gives you the equivelent of a very short lens, very expensive lens.

sorry to necro this post, but i am also somewhat of a newby, and just bought a 1d classic from adorama, and i would have to agree with getting screw mount or fd mount or other manual focus lenses along with the appropriate adapter for landscapes. personally, i will also be buying a 1d mk 2 soon along with either a 300 f4l is or a 100-400 l lense, or possibly a 400 f5.6l lense, but im leaning towards the 300 f4l for now because i know i will be using TCs for birds, hopefully also for birds in flight, but we will see how that goes with the mk 2 when i get it. in the mean time, i will be using the 1d classic and getting used to the weight and feel of a pro series camera once it arrives.

Be careful, it is a slippery slope. Once you get used to the build of the 1 series, there is no going back! I shot with a 1Ds for several years (most of my shots on my website were taken with the 1Ds) and it was hard for me to go to a smaller camera (D700 - but is almost as heavy as a 1Ds). I did hate the batteries of the 1Ds/1D/1D2n..

Look into getting the older 300mm f/4 non IS. They are just as stellar, and you can get them for like $500 if you can find them. I dunno if Canon repairs them, however.
