p.1 #1 · 5D Mark III - Sports Photography

Just curious anyone using a 5dM3 for sports? I know it only has 5 fps, so that is a mark against it, but how does the AF compare to a 1D. I currently have a 1DM3 that I use for most of my sports, and was going to upgrade this year. But not sure I want to spend the $$$ for a 1Dx, and not sure a 1DM4 is a big enough update.

your thoughts please.

It actually has 6 fps, true it's not 10 though. I've heard very good reports, still awaiting my copy though...

1div is a huge improvement over the 1diii

The 5d3 is close enough to 6fps to be 6, until it's battery power drops.

Sports enthusiasts are loving the 5d3, af, and improved fps over the mk2.

How does the High ISO compare between the MIV and M5D3? I know the M5D3 is going to be better, and the fact that I shoot weddings also this is a big factor in my decision.

On paper the 1DX looks like the best all around choice if it ever is released, but 7k vs 4k is it that big of a difference.

Thanks for the replies.

For 2.5 times the price, I'd expect at least twice the IQ at ANY ISO, not just the high ones... which, of course, the 1DX will not deliver over the 5D3 (or 2 for that matter) -- comparing those two tools on IQ is not fair since IQ is not the reason to buy a 1DX over a 5D3.

Unless you're shooting weddings outdoors in Afghanistan during a firefight, the 5D3 will do you nicely and leave a very decent amount of dough in your pocket.

As for the 1D4 -- IMHO, the 1.3 crop bodies are a dead-end for Canon. If I owned one (I don't), I'd certainly keep it and use it while it was still useful.... I would not buy a new one or even a used one unless it was one hell of a steal. I'd stick to full frame or 1.6 equipment appropriate for your work....

I will take 2x 5Dmk3 than 1Dx anytime!

Try a windy day shooting baseball/softball on dirt fields. It's like driving a car with plastic bumpers, good luck.

I have a 7d and 5D2 used with weather-sealed L lenses that have been rained on (common), had sand at the beach blown on them (common), sprayed with sea water (less common), and once the 7D had a rock kicked in its face by a running horse hard enough to shatter a filter and put a black eye on my face....... I've never had an issue with either. CPS cleans them annually... they both have tens of thousands of clicks on them.....

So.... given there's no doubt that the the 1D series is even tougher than that...... what does that say about what you can do with THEM?.

Here's a good video of what a 7d can take -- I was shocked by the freezer episode more than anything -- digging ice out of the mirror box with a knife is a scary thing --- drying the camera in an oven and putting it right back to work is downright funny ----

If anyone wants to pony up $6.5 grand, I'll gladly conduct a similar series of tests on the 1DX and find out just how tough IT is --

I'm not the best person to ask if you're leaning towards a 5D3.
I played with the decision and bought 2 mark iv's.
It's just better. There's too many sacrifices FOR ME and not enough gain. That said, if the 5D3 was 8FPS, I would probably have 2 5D3 w/grip.

The 5D3 does 2 things better for me. 1/3-1/2 stop better high ISO. Full frame. That's my take on it for what it's worth. Also, if I end up shooting more weddings this year and less sports and don't mind losing spot af linked to af point, I may go 5d3/.

Just rig both 5DIIIs on a stereo bracket, and trigger them together! Since they are unlikely to be synchronized to each other, voila, you have 12 frames per second! Plus redundancy, which one 1DX doesn't have.

Why 2? Get 4, and then you can have 22MP 24p video! Take THAT, Blu-ray!

There are quite a few posts on this subject here in this forum and in the sports forum. I've posted quite a few images with it from sports.

I had a 1D2 and still have a1DS3 alongside the 5D3. The 5D3 AF is the best ever in a Canon DSLR in low light and motion. I wish all the Canon DSLRs would have been like this from the 1D2 forward. The AF in the 1DS3 is quite good but as light levels drop at and below EV5 the 5D3 beats it. The 5D3 also feels fast when using it. RAW buffer could be a LOT better but in JPG its good enough for sports. The integrated lens correction also makes shooting jpg very convenient and the files look better.

I have a 1DIV and a 5DIII. I use both for Sports but the 1DIV is primary because of the FPS - 6 vs 10 is a significant difference for action. For most field sports (soccer, lacrosse, baseball, softball . . .) I shoot the 1DIV with a 300 2.8 and keep a 70-200 2.8 on the 5DIII. 75% of my "good" shots come from the 1DIV. The 1.3 crop helps stretch the reach of the 300. Image quality is close enough to the same but I do add 1/3 stop exposure comp to the 5DIII. Can't wait for B&H to send out the battery grip for the 5DIII - should make a world of difference. Always reach the buffer limit faster on the 5DIII (both cameras set to L RAW) - another reason I prefer the 1DIV. Having both is great, I use the 5DIII for everything else besides sports/action and like having the option of the smaller body (5DIII) for walk-around stuff.

I have the same setup as acoll123 primarily for shooting soccer and it has been working great. I have been very pleased with the 5DIII autofocus. That said, I keep it pretty simple and just use the center AF point because that is what I am used to. What I do like is having a backup/short range sports camera that can double as a good landscape/people camera. I do get more keepers from the 1D4 simply because I am getting more pics in a series and therefore more likely to catch the precise moment of impact (e.g. header or save or whatever. But because I can work the sidelines (youth/high school soccer) there are many times with the 300 2.8 is too tight. Having the 5DM3 with the 70-200 at hand give me another option.

Even the "lowly" 5D2 was designed by Canon as a sports camera, so yeah definitely!

Lexar 1000x cards improve the RAW bufffer a lot even over Sandisk Extreme Pro 90MB/s card which themselves improve it a lot over 200x cards.
A recent thread of mine has some stats on it all.

I have a couple 1D3's & a 5D3.... I've shot about 10 basebal/softballl games with the 5d3, most with a 400 2.8. The images are awesome! Last week I shot a game under the lights @ 8000 iso. The images were very clean. I shot a game for MaxPreps and post processed in CS5 with just a touch of NR put into the action I was using...

I found the AF more reliable than my 1d3's even after all the fixes (I still very much like my 1d3).

I just got my grip from unique photo, (cancelled my B&H order ) it came quick, haven't had a chance to try it yet...
