I am utterly frustrated now and hence I am posting this.... 5DMk2 in a tethered shoot on macbook pro running OSX 10.6.8 isnt recognised even through Lightroom/aperture or capture one! however my mk2 gets recognised by my imac and read by LR/aperture ....but tethering becomes a problem if the wire is long( tethers with the small canon usb provided with the cam)..problem is with my MBP in which the profiler identifies my canon camera but none of the softwares ...not even image capture tethers it!

I'm running Lightroom 3.6 and my MBP is 10.6.8 as well and it works for me. I've tried it with several different USB cables and no problems. Did you try alternative USB ports on your MBP?

Have you tried turning on and off again?
Joking aside, first step to anything Mac-related, I've always been told to run Repair Permission in Disk Utility. Then as andylaiphoto said, try a different USB port. Also, are you running the MBP on battery power or with the AC adapter? Do you have any other devices plugged in via USB?
