p.1 #1 · Lightroom 4 in the Mac app store. That sucks!!!!!

Lightroom 4 is now available in the app store. this may seem for some a good idea but i think this is a very bad move for us Mac users who work with Lightroom.

Why?

You CAN NO LONGER get the upgrade Version of Lightroom. If you want to upgrade, you have to buy the whole thing. This costs more money and I do not see the benefit for us mac photographers. Might switch to Windows.

What is your opinion on this matter?

"Lightroom 4 now available on the Mac App Store
We’re pleased to announce that Lightroom 4 is now available via the Mac App Store in North America. The Mac App Store is a convenient way to research and purchase software for your Mac computer. It’s based on an Electronic Software Delivery (ESD) method so there’s no box and no shiny disc. Instead, you download and install Lightroom directly from the Mac App Store, similar to how ESD works on Adobe.com and Amazon.com in North America. The Mac App Store offering is the same product offered on Adobe.com in terms of features and functionality but has been modified to comply with Mac App Store requirements. We’re excited to offer this distribution option to our Mac customers; however, there are a few important pieces of information you should be aware of:

This is a single platform license for Mac only. (The boxed version and the ESD offering on Adobe.com can be installed on Mac or Windows)
Updates will take place through the Mac App Store, not via Adobe.com for this version of Lightroom. When we update Lightroom for new camera support(about 4 times per year), the Mac App Store version may be released at a different time than the update on Adobe.com
There is no upgrade pricing available on the Mac App Store for Lightroom customers who own Lightroom 1, 2 or 3.
Because there is no upgrade pricing or upgrade validation currently available on the Mac App Store, there is no guarantee that upgrade pricing will be available to Mac App Store Lightroom 4 customers when Lightroom 5 and future versions of Lightroom are released.

You can still upgrade through Adobe or several other online retailers, just not the App store.

Hope this stays open for some time. With Mountain Lion or future version Apple could decide, that software can from now on only be installed via the App store. I am sure, this will come. It is only a matter of time, not when.

They might be able to shoehorn smaller app developers into the AppStore but trying to force Adobe or Autodesk to sell exclusively through them might be a bit more problematic.

Huh? Adobe says there's no guarantee that you will be able to upgrade from LR4 to LR5. That's all. So what's the big deal? Just buy from Adobe. And you might switch to windows over this? dave

the store can't handle this....no need to whip out the tin foil hat.

At the enterprise level, you don't jsut buy the software, you buy the SLA's and very complicated licensing structure with it. I have a backup solution that supports macs, *nix, windows, etc. I don't run it for my graphic artists but the option is there (they dump to a windows filer server and I do tapes off of that).

If apple was to be my only source of download and installation (remembering app store does not give a copy of the installer files) for this back up solution download if I ran the mac client, they put themselves smack dab into the SLA (service level aggreement) i have with this backup solution vendor. If something is glitchy with the app store, I need the cleint download for an oh crap IT disaster recovery and they drop the ball, gratz, I have a SLA violation. Lets skip the foreplay of we are so sorry, yadda yadda and go straight to the penalties section.

This enterprise level SLA protection scheme....not something apple wants to be a part of. Why they'll keep things the way they are and app store is mainly personal use. Angry birds not accessible for a new mac install is not do or die for a large company. They won't have the lawyer in the nice suit call up saying penalty A for neglect of service is xyz over it.
