p.1 #1 · Photoshop CS6 with or without Lightroom 4

I have used Photoshop for years, and now upgraded to CS6 for use with Nikon D800 raw files. I have never used Lightroom. Should I be using both? Thank you

Are you a volume shooter that shoots thousands per shooting? If so, Lr4 may help.

Whether or not you shoot thousands per outing, if you have a bundle of photos that you want to quickly find and manage then I expect that you will appreciate Lr. Even more so if you have photos on external storage that is not always on-line because unlike Bridge it will keep track of those images and previews even while the originals are off-line.

You may find that many of your images can be managed as raw files within Lr and will not need to edited by Ps. This could save you a lot of space by not producing new files. Lr just stores edit tweaks and the original files, and shows you what the results will look like; you then export to new files only if required.

I have no doubt that Ps is more powerful in many ways but Lr suits many of us to the extent that Ps is needed for only a small percentage of our photos.

Disclaimer: I'm not into Ps much, or Bridge at all.

Yes, you should be using both. LR is an amazing tool and will be the center of everything you are doing with your images. I am an advanced PS user, but LR has become a very comprehensive tool to support the bulk of what you want to do with your images.

There are so many features in LR 4 it is just to much to go into in a post. Chris Orwig has a number of LR 4 training classes over at lynda.com. They are the best way to introduce yourself to the product. You can also download the app and evaluate it. But, if you just download the app without any training you will be missing much of the power in LR.
