p.5 #1 · Wild Canon switch to Nikon rant.

Obviously non of you posting here have hung out with any painters in NY NY. Specially the abstract community. At 1st it even made me cringe and I'm not a Puritan by any means. But once I got past that.....and realized the incredible creativity these painters had....the raw talent.....I was just amazed. Will they be understood by a room full of engineers like this forum.....Nope..not a chance. Ones choice of words is not a litmus test for ones talent and creativity....but you will never get the engineer personality to understand that. Was it a well written artical....no not at all. Does his word mean anything....to some it does. Just my opinion of course....

I wouldn't say it the same way but I too am more than annoyed with Canon. I waited three years for Canon to make a FF pro camera (since I bought the D3) and now that they have announced the 1Dx it still isn't available.

The 5DMK III isn't the answer for me. So I continue to sell off my Canon system. I kinda felt a bit of comfort because someone else is even more upset than I am about having to change systems. So let's just say his strength is visual and he's not a copy writer.

I always like to read about other people switching from canon to nikon and I hope that more people do. Currently Nikons are just as good, if not better than canon bodies and cost much less. I would love to buy a 5d mk3 but am to stubborn because of the 800 dollar premium over the D800 (Canadian dollars after tax). Maybe if more people do switch canon will bring down the price of the 5d and 1d to become more competitive.

oh, and agree, article sucked!!

I think the 5D3 is awesome. Its actually an upgrade to the 1DS3. For a lot less. Its Image quality is not hugely better, but it adds a tad higher speed, better AF, more useful features and better high ISO performance in a smaller and more affordable package.

The only thing better in the D800 for example is the extra MP and resolution and extra shadow recovery in low ISO. Everything else the 5D3 is equal or better.

If you do not care about frames per second, then the D800 is less expensive than the 5d mark iii. But if you do care, then they are priced fairly closely since you MUST get the D800 grip to achieve the max frame rate of the 5d3.

I agree with one of the previous posters. The tide eventually turns but you might have to sit tight for 4 years waiting for it.

and apparently he thinks that some trust the profane AND pretentious even more

Now that you mention it, yes, Weeks was indeed pretentious in his blog/diatribe. Being that this is the equipment forum, I focused on his dressing down both Canon and Nikon with almost equal disdain, model and year dependent.

But he also ripped on the burgeoning renaissance of newly minted digital photographers.... by far his most humorous line to me was how he didn't want to be caught standing in the same line as these "donuts". I laughed outloud at that one, despite it being at my own expense. I suppose that's why I thought it was so funny. Many a truth spoken in jest.

Yet, the pretentiousness bordering upon contempt that some so called "professional" photographers attempt to elevate themselves with by spewing deleterious condemnations upon serious amatuers and well heeled hobbyists, serves only to discredit the "professional" who hurls the insults, by revealing their jealousy of other's resources and their fear of being replaced by better talent or obsoleted by sheer dilution.

I get that, just like most people do. But that doesn't stop me from enjoying a thoroughly over the top and humorous rant as entertainment. I'm glad you posted it Tom. Free speech lives on!

"The only thing better in the D800 for example is the extra MP and resolution and extra shadow recovery"

That's the "only" thing !!!! Extra resolution and extra shadow recovery are exactly what I want from my next 5D purchase, and why some are disappointed in the 5D3 release. Apart from the improved AF (which some people depend on, some don't) I can't see much reason to upgrade from a 5D2 to a 5D3, but that D800 sensor goodness is very seductive indeed. I very much look forward to the day Canon bring out an equivalent body.

. A curious crowd here. I wouldn't call the rant in question profane at all. Sure, he uses some four-letter words, but so what? There aren't many of them and he doesn't use them in particularly imaginative ways.

The guy's much bigger problem is that it's a poorly organized stream-of-consciousness rant the main purpose of which seems to make him feel superior to "not-truly-professional" photographers. He really dislikes gearheads and specifically people who hang out in forums like this one :-D

Hah yeah, reminds me of some of the recent posts I've seen on another forum where someone was applauding the higher prices from Canon, saying that it will keep away all the fauxtographers once again so all the business can go to the true photographers and won't automatically be taken away by all those who have no talent/skills. hmm.

Ah whatever though, let this blogger rant (maybe it will even lead to better flash capabilities ).

Wow, this guy is one crappy writer. I don't know who he is, but based on that, I could care less what he thinks or what he has to say. Let's hope his photographic skills are better than his written communication skills.

So, only good writers have anything interesting or valuable to say? :-D That's an unusual approach...

It was a bumbling, incoherent rant. I would critique it based on the points he was trying to make, though I couldn't make too much of a point out of it.

If you can't clearly articulate your point, no one but yourself is going to know how brilliant you are. All I read was some profanity laced, poorly written anti-canon rant that sounds like it could have been written by a pot-smoking 15 year old.

And we are supposed to value what this guy has to say? Color me unimpressed.

I don't bother with Tom's links anymore. The skeptic in me wonders if he is just a shill.

That certainly was an incoherent rant and there is no reason for you to spend time and effort to critique it.

But your generalization -- a crappy writer never has anything interesting to say -- strikes me as untrue.
